Engine problem while at the track yesterday. (FIXED)

Re: Engine problem while at the track yesterday. (updated)

I'm a doing the Happy Dance :pbj

Went back out after lunch and decided I'd go through everything ONE MORE TIME. Started with the dizzy. Pulled it out, looked at the gear and pin and it all looked fine (just like the last time I looked). As I was rotating the shaft I tipped it up enough that out of the corner of my eye I notice that the pickup was not turning with the shaft. I looked closely (actually I had to remove my glasses to see that close) and noticed that the roll pin was only half there which was allowing the pickup to move freely from the shaft.

I thankfully found both halves and replaced with a new roll pin. The car fired right up and runs just as well as it always has.

and back together.

Thanks to all for your ideas and help and for keeping me sane!!

Back to the happy dance!

Try a different coil. If that doesn't fix it put a point driven dist. in it with a regular coil to see if it's the box. It sounds like your ignition is breaking up. If it jumped timing it wouldn't misfire like that IMO.

Something broke, it was running fine, you going up in RPM and poof. Could be the pick-up in the dist. Something's not making the coil hit everytime. Changing the ignition over to a set of points and a regular coil will give you some answers.

Glad to here it was something fairly simple and not engine damage. Now get out there and pass the PT. :lol

Yep....as usual John was RIGHT. Why didn't you just say that Wed night when it happened!

Slacker.

Whoohoo! Easy fix!

Sounds like my easy fix today after 4.5 really hard sessions. Car decided to blow a 3" tear into the top rad hose and blow coolant out like a geyser all over the windsheild at full tilt rounding a bend. Ran over to Autozone and put another hose on it, runs just fine. Phew.

That is 2 coolant explosions at that track this year. 1st a freeze plug and now this. I hope its coincedence and nothing more serious.

Didn't see the video till Thurs. ..... I've herd that sound before. That's what a bad condenser sounds like.

I vote it's an ignition issue, not the carb. It sounds like a bad coil or if you have points, it's the condenser or both.

I've herd that should a few times - Just my .02

I also have had that feeling a few times. Watching you pull the steering wheel says it all - :roulette

Glad you got it fixed.

i think somebody else said it sounded like an ignition problem weds night...... :wm?

glad you got it fixed easy enough. i had a dizzy problem once & only way i discovered it was turning the thing over by hand & noticed the rotor button ended up in a slightly different spot each time. ended up the dipshit at the speed shop sold me a 351w dizzy to go in a 351c. the gear was slipping a tooth every now & then. ended up having to replace the dizzy & camshaft.
