High RPM burnouts.....

Possible bad news for the '66.

Sunday afternoon after having "a few" I took the '66 to the top of the driveway and did a nice 30 second brake stand. The rev limiter kicked on once or twice. After the brake stand I took a short trip down a back/desolate road next to my house and took her up to a quick 100 MPH. Returning back to the house I did another brake stand until the rear of the car came around sideways in the road. A mini-van was coming that distracted me and I had to end the burnout early and then I stalled sideways in the road. When I re-started the engine to pull out of the road and into my driveway there was a VERY noticeable driveline vibration associated with RPM's (not MPH).

I'm almost afraid to start the car up now out of fear that I've once again broken something.

She sure looks pretty parked in the garage though! Ignorance is bliss.

Was it noticeable at high RPMs in neutral or did you get to check? That can locate things from the bellhousing forward. If it's RPM related it definitely isn't the tires.

You felt this just pulling into the driveway? How high an RPM could you reach pulling up to the house?

Any noise associated or just the vibration? I don't recall if yours is manual or not but sure sounds "clutchy" to me. Especially given the prior antics. That or maybe u-joint but that doesn't fit as well with your description. It does however fit nicely if you abruptly let off as the van approached and you got a bit of wheel hop coming out of the burnout.

Could it be your tires? Did you pick up some road trash with your hot tires?

Because I was in a hurry to get off of the paved road.... because the minivan was now stopped waiting for me in a big cloud of smoked rubber.... yes, I pulled off the road too quickly and onto may gravel/crushed rock driveway. The rear tires are going to need to be cleaned (again) as there is dirt/small pebbles plastered all over the tread. But.... the driveline vibration was not associated with the car moving.... it only vibrated during increased RPM's.

If it's RPM related it definitely isn't the tires

No, it's not the tires or the rearend. Engine, trans or driveshaft. I'm hoping it's the trans as it was the weakest link and I have a trans guy that'll go through her rather cheaply/quickly, but I have a bad feeling that it's engine related. I'd been drinking so my memory isn't the greatest.

We'll see. Maybe I'll start her up this evening to confirm the bad news. Might as well as the bad news has been coming in for 2 weeks straight and I'm now used to it.

but sure sounds "clutchy" to me.

Darn, I didn't even think about the clutch, but now that you mention it you might have nailed it. I'd be ecstatic if I'd just cooked the clutch. No, no wheel hop.... 4 link rearend.

Used to it or numb to it?

Both?

Sunday afternoon immediately after the burnout I got a call from my 23 year old son who lives in southern NH. His relationship with his fiance is in trouble, his life is a mess.... and he needed an "immediate" plane ticket to my house. I don't mind buying plane tickets, but the "next available flight" ones aren't cheap. Another mouth to feed around here until he get's his crap straightened out. Whatever, it's family.

BIL in SanDiego has both of our girls out there on vacation. We sent them out there and he's responsible for sending them back. He bought the retrun trip plane tickets last Feb/March with a small portion of his income tax refund check, but now is too broke to pay for their luggage. What blows goats is we sent them out there on SWA (read "bags fly free" and the teen girls didn't pack lightly!) and he's sending them back on USAIR (no bags fly free). So now they have all of this luggage out there and I'm going to get stiffed by having to pay for it to come back. WTF ever. This is the last time we send them out there.

There's more.... but not really Mustang related.... f'in Chevy Cavalier related.... cooling fan/AC issues that I'm into for ~$400 in parts that still isn't working properly. AC is blowing ice cold, but in Park RPM's are surging 1200 RPM's with erratic clutch engagement. Check engine light popped a cooling fan circuit code and as best I can tell the darn cooling fan isn't even coming on... ever.... but the repair manual states that the sensor should energize the circuit at 210-230... and the gauge isn't going over 205.... I dunno, still playing around with this one.

Driving after having a few? :nk

Abusing the '66? :nk

There, I hope you learned your lesson!... and I hope it's nothing major. :nta

Update.

I pulled the '66 out yesterday after work and couldn't detect any issues whatsoever. The car runs/drives without any issues. Maybe the vibration could be attributed to the clutch getting an excessive workout.... I dunno, but everything is working fine now.

On the Cavalier's non-energized radiator cooling fan issues..... starting the troubleshooting with the simplest possible causes I pulled the large underhood 30 amp fuze to find it blown. Replacing the fuze has fixed the problem. What caused the fuze to blow in the first place I don't know, but if it continues working I really don't care.

Maybe things are starting to look up!

Did you not learn anything from the prior experience...? Or maybe you just really DO like GO...

What prior experience? The speeding ticket from a few months ago? The speeding ticket happened on a well traveled interstate. The recent quick jump to 100 occured on a dead end desolate road behind my house. Before the road deadends there is a 1/2 mile straightaway of nothing but bushes on the sides of the road. It's about as desolate as one could imagine... and my own personal 1/4 racetrack.

Have the girls send their luggage home via UPS, it could be cheaper than the airline. A friend of mine moved all his stuff in his apartment (except his mattress) from San Francisco to Boston for less than $500.

I'm out of this equation. The wife took care of this last night by obtaining the airline ticket confirmation numbers from my BIL and doing an on-line check-in with the airlines enabling her to pre-pay for the girls checked baggage. She talked to the girls and got them to consolidate all of their checked bags down to three bags under 50 lbs each, for which she paid $25 a bag.

Hmmmm.......
I sure hope you don't have the deer population down there that we have up here. I'd hate to read a post from you that you trashed that mustang. Even a medium sized dog would make a mess of your front sheet metal at those speeds.
That said, I've been known to do the same thing on the straight stretch near my house.

I NEVER do burnouts, they're illegal.

yeah....riiiiiight.
