The water in San Carlos is safe to drink, but the tap water has a metallic taste due to the purification. I brush my teeth with it, but have bottled water for drinking and cooking as do many of the residents there.

You actually are more likely to get sick from what you have eaten than from drinking the water. And, don't forget, ice cubes are made from water. ;)

When I was in Mexico in Feb I also brushed my teeth in it--had 50 or more drinks made with their ice-----supposed to have reverse osmosis at the resort--I also read like Laurie said, most of the time the stomach problems are food related---complete change in diet for most.
 
What was your first clue.......just the fact that a thread is started gives reason to hijacking it.
