think i'll take a nice feathered owl in the trees anytime over this. was amazing to watch this sucker climb the tree though. he went about 20 ft up, found a hole, ate some baby birds then went the rest of the way in & took a nap.

They eat a lot of baby birds in the spring and small rats and mice--we had a big soft maple tree where I grew up, the black snakes were always eating baby birds--they had big bulges in their body depending how far along the young birds were in the digestive system--mother nature can be a heartless bitch but she maintains a natural balance in man does not interfere. Neat picture.

Yeah...good snake to have around. Most (not all) poisonous snakes have that triangular looking head.

try telling the mrs "its a good snake". i tried, but she's having none of it. i just wish i could teach it to hunt moles. between the moles tearing up the yard & the deer eating all the plants a couple weeks ago, front yard looks like crap.

All snakes are killers.
All snakes are at least 8 inches between the eyes and as thick as your forearm.
Am i paranoid about snakes - you bet i am.

Even the poisonous ones keep the rodent population in check.

I will tell you the only good rattle snake is one made into chili or a belt.

Snake is like eating a very long chicken neck. Same taste kind of too.

Love to get them in the spring when they cross the roads. One good blast with the 12 gauge shotgun and chili is soon to be had!

Leave 'em alone and they leave you alone. Last thing any of them want is to deal with a human. Imagine what your property/home would be like without any snakes to control all the "other stuff" that could then have pretty much freedom to come and go as they please.

Now OZ is another story. They got some wicked dangerous ones down there. But again, stay away from them and they will likely do the same. But if they do choose to come near...get the hell outta there!

You obviously have never been chased by a Moccasin! I think they sit around in their burrows and take bets on who's gonna bite who.

You honestly sat through it that long?

Back in the late 70's we were camping and ran across a rattlesnake in our campground. My stepdad dispatched it with a small camp shovel (broke it in the process, I guess I would have too). We wanted to cut the rattle off, of course. He said to let it sit for a while first. We went for a hike and when we got back the snake was gone. Shortly after, we opened our cooler only to find the snake thrown inside and the rattle cut off. People can be real dicks! :bomb

I second that. Most snakes don't bother me but I hate the freaking Water Moccasins...those devils will come looking for you. I kill them on sight!

I third that. Could've lost my life to a 6' Moccasin sunnin' on the side of a river bank back in '82. ...Bastard's. :rant

More than likely wouldn't have killed you--here is some info on cottonmouths-The "Water Moccasin" is a generic name that Southerners give to any of a variety of snakes. One that seems to get the most attention is the Cottonmouth. It is a pit viper and poisonous. As previously answered it can be deadly but less than 1 percent of the time in a person weighing in at over 50 lbs. You should seek immediate medical help, do not cut, massage, suck or irritate the bite site though. Wash with mild soap and water and keep the bite area below the heart level if at all possible.
Fortunately "Water Moccasin" also refers to any number of other non-poisonous snakes as well. The Blotched Water snake lives in the same areas and looks almost identical from above. You can tell a difference by observing the scale pattern near the tail but who wants to get that close. The cottonmouth will generally swim on top of the water and it will have its head above water at an angle. On land it will move with its head at a 45 degree angle. The non-poisonous ones swim completele under water and have the head almost flat. On land they still have their head at less than 10 degrees.
Leave the wildlife alone.
