License Tag Issue

Corn Hauler
I have Year of Manufacture tags of my 68 Mustang. I went to renew my license tag today and the County Tax Assessor said someone else had my numbers. Evidently the State did not check to see if the number were good before issuing new plates last year. I have had these plates for 4 years. They renewed mine and said the other people will need new plates when they renew.

I have been wondering why I have not received any toll bills since last May. I hope they don't figure it out and dump a years worth of tolls on me.

That's funny... I was always told the numbering system was computer monitored so duplicates would not get issued.

I just went to cancel the YOM plates from my '66. I had it originally on the silver with black stripes car (sold it) and transferred them to the grey one . Six months later I sell the grey one and they have no record of that plate being on that car. The plate and that title did not connect anywhere in the Fl. system.

Such quality systems we deal with.

Isn't TX DMV fun?!! While I lived there off and on I usually had GREAT customer service at the DMV offices throughout the state. The data keeping system can (and will!) throw you some curves. .

Besides your case Jan, I have my own little fun experience with them. While stationed there in the military (84-88), my SC driver's license expired. No sweat, I'm still active duty. Thank you SC, you went and repealed the law on active duty military so when my d/l said expired, it meant expired. No problem, screw it, I'll get a TX d/l. After all, it helped me establish TX residency for taxes AND it didn't expire until 90 days after seperation, no renewals required. Fast forward to 1998, I had exited the military, applied for and was hired as a Border Patrol agent. I have the whole house packed in a UHaul, sitting in the front yard and ready to pull out of New Orleans bound for TX. I suddenly get a call from the security office for the Border Patrol hiring unit in DC (it's long since changed now). They tell me, Houston, we have a problem. Seems my TX d/l is suspended and I have a lengthy and baaaaad driving record in TX, to include a DWI. I had to immediately fax them a photo id copy or I wasn't going anywhere. :rant

I also had to contact TX DMV in Austin. Seems that in TX when you have no serious driving record infractions over a given number of years, and no d/l renewal (e.g. military members), DMV retires your d/l number. After another set period of time they then re-issue that number! In order to get it all straight you have to contact the records archives in Austin. The folks I spoke with there (and helped me get is straightened out), told me it's a crack in the system. Ya think?!!! Seems they had indeed retired and then re-issued my d/l number to some highway maniac!! :steer

What a pain in the a$$ that was to clear up!!! I now tell ALL military folks I encounter who have a TX d/l, renew it by mail EVERY time the listed expiration date comes around!

They will only let you renew it online for about 10 years then they force you to come in for an updated picture and sight test. I had renewed my license online for about 10 years and this past August I had to go into the DPS station to renew it. It was a pita waiting in the 2+ hour line....hopefully they will change something before I have to go back again in ~ 10 years.

Gotcha. I last got a new d/l there in '99. Sounds like they've changed a few things around. Thanks for passing that along.

Sounds like an excellent opportunity to stick up a couple of 7-11s. When life brings you lemons........
