An office acquintance asked me yesterday if I'd help him assess a local '65 Coupe that appeared on a "local items for sale" website. Looking at the pictures...

... and the price.... I told him I'd be happy to give the car a good looking over before he plunked down his cash.

Laying here on the couch 30 minutes ago watching the Heat crush the Knicks, my co-worker unexpectedly pulled in my driveway with the car on a "test drive". I had him pull it over to the garage and we nosed it in. A code San Jose car with original inner apron and matching door data tag. GT valance with trumpet knockoffs that look/sound good. Interior complete and in 8 out of 10 condition (homemade package tray wrapped in pleather that doesn't completely cover the area that an OE package tray would cover (gaps at the rear edge)). 4V 302 engine that purrs like a kitten at idle and revs cleanly through 5k. Very clean engine compartment, but a possible rear main seal seepage type leak. C4 tranny that shifts smoothly, but the kickdown linkage was intact, but disconnected. I crawled under, in and around every possible area of the car and found absolutely "zero" rust. Poured a gallon of water into the "very clean looking inside through the grille" cowl and all of the water poured out the side of car where it should and NO water entered the passenger compartment. I could find no obvious evidence of ANY metal replacement on the entire car and nothing to indicate the car had ever been in an accident.

Nice install of an R model front valance. Clean install of a Shelby style hood scoop. "Okay" install of Shelby style side scoops (the paint is cracking in a couple spots where the scoops were bonded onto the body).

The paint job overall is "okay". It looks better in the pictures than it does in person. It was a quickie paint job typical of something you'd see from Maaco as there was a noticeable amount of trash in the paint and nothing was removed as part of the paint job, but at 5-10 feet it looks pretty good.

Tires are brand new and it's using late model Mustang Bullit wheels with back space adapters. Four drum brake system appears all original.

All electrical is in good working order, but looking up under the dash some PO's have hacked into the system in a few spots typical of aftermarket radio installs. Headliner is new and looks great. Carpet, upholstery, etc. are all in great condition.

The car needs maybe $300 in parts to fix a few minor issues. The PO bypassed the heater core due to a leaking heater core. One of the front brakes needs adjusting as it's dragging/pulling to one side just a little bit. The passenger door latch needs adjusting as it's not catching like it should without playing around with it.

My co-worker returned the car to the seller and asked him if he could "think about it" until Sunday. I told him if he didn't buy it that I wanted first dibs.

I've never seen a car in such nice condition anywhere near that price around this usually rusty area.

The asking price is $7500 obo. The seller is moving to the DC area next week and needs the car sold ASAP.

No rust is nice is very very nice. Sounds like a respectable driver.
Compression test? How long can it be driven before the main seal needs replacement? Stuck brake cylinder?
Fair price $7K

I just got a call from my co-worker. He bought the car this afternoon for $6500.

Yes, it still has the Jelly Jar master cylinder. Yes, the dragging brake is most likely a sticking wheel cylinder.

No, I still believe that sinking $10-15k into a Coupe is a bad idea when that same amount of money could be used on a FB/Vert, however this car only needed very minor attention. I'd have bought it and flipped it. Before anyone get's all riled up.... the seller of this Coupe stated he had sunk over $16k into the car over the last 4 years and it sold today for $6500. The seller took almost a $10k loss. I've owned plenty of Coupes and have always "broke even" when it comes time to sell, but I've been very lucky. I DO NOT dislike Coupes, I'd just rather have a FB so as not to lose my arse when it comes time to sell.
