Looks like I may be selling...

Hell Bent for Speed
... The ratrod that is. Out of a whim I replied to a post on my ratrod forum to an individual looking to purchase a finished rat truck. And needless to say the influx of private messages was overwhelming. And now, well, now I'm torn. I even had one guy call and talk to me for almost an hour today.

So I want to do a secondary test here for those interested. You all have seen the build, etc and know the truck. With that said, and if you were in the market to buy a finished rat truck and mine presented itself, what would you be willing to pay? Be honest and don't worry about hurting my feelings. I have received a couple of different offers so far...

Okay you said 100% honesty, I appreciate the work you do, the parts you are able to fabricate are top shelf, I am sure you don't take shortcuts, I have just never really been a rat rod fan, that was a big 1950"s early sixty"s thing , and it is still pretty well followed, I personally just never caught the bug, kinda like the Harley bug, I love looking at a nice Harley just not enough to buy one, okay back on subject I am only guessing at $10-12 thousand and I am probably out in left field---if it is like a lot of projects you never get what you have invested, but that is not what it is about.

Too hard to answer as i have never been a fan of rat rods,
but if it all gets too hard, keep it and sell me your mustang.
I will ensure it has a pampered retirement in OZ.

I guess I thought the whole idea of Rat Rodding was to find and build the thing yourself using all the unique and unusual things that you can find to show your personality and sense of humor ?? Never new people bought them already finished by someone else. :shrug Learn something new everyday.

What do you have into it material wise? I would start there and then figure out how much you would be willing to take for all the time you put into the build.

Since its a newly done build, I would look at it like the guy buying it paid you to build the truck for him. What would you have charged him? Then add the parts and materials? I wouldn't short yourself since you really haven't had any time to really enjoy the truck.

Most I have seen go between $10-15,000.....no matter how well or crappy the work is. It is more about the overall "look" and if the buyer just has to have "that one" rat rod since there is such a wide style to them. Start at $20,000 and send me anything over #15,000.......you can never go up in the middle of a deal.

I'd bet you'll be lucky to get $15K. Try for $20K like Pete said, you might get lucky.

Did you get the tranny working?

No offense, but to me they just are not worth that much. I was thinking 5 - 8 k tops. They are more about being fun to build with whatever is lying around. I just don't see top dollar. If you can get it, good for u.

Local one...for an idea.

hand built rat rot. street legal with title. 1929 ford model a pickup. has complete roll cage. speedway motors axles, brakes, components, etc....will sell less motor and trans. $6000.

will sell complete ready to drive with 9:1 18 degree chevrolet super late model engine built by progressive racing engine. approx 700hp.,quarter master bellhousing, clutch, muncie four speed trans for $14,500.

Your post prompted me to do a bit of searching and it would seem an asking price of $15k is on the high end of what I ran across. Most are in the $5-10k range. I'm positive your frame work and details far exceed most if not all of what I found but I doubt more than 5% of probable buyers would even recognize, let alone pay for that value.
The wild card is that anyone looking to buy a rat is doing so most likely because they lack the skill to build their own. I'd bet a large majority are the type to buy an expensive Harley and never really ride it. Think Wild Hogs. Because of this I think you might be able to get someone to pay over market. The only caution I would throw at you is that the market for rat buyers must be small. If you've got a serious buyer asking, I'd negotiate a fair deal and take the cash (provided you want to sell).

No idea on value, but if the offers line your pockets with profits, then I see a business here. Your work is amazing and it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that people have noticed.

I threw out a figure of $12,500 knowing that would be top dollar range - as most of you all are stating on here. I have a cash offer of 10K right now.

That's NICE money for a rat rod. It's a lot less than what I have into it material wise. Time wise... probably not. But I enjoyed doing it, so I don't count that too much... The cash would help fund a wicked ass coupe too.

But I have not got to enjoy this truck but for for a couple hundred miles. Tops. I'm torn. :shrug

J,

SELL. Like I said earlier there probably aren't a lot of buyers out there for this kind of ride. You learned a lot on this build and I'm sure there are areas where looking back you might have wanted to do things differently, etc. You seem to be that kind of guy. Take the cash and do it again on another build. Your next one will be even better. We all told you that you were making that thing too nice as a rat anyway. I say the next one is a full on hot rod with paint. Then you could expect (if you were to ever sell) to get some real coin for your efforts.

Tell you what: I'll take the $10k and you can keep the RatRod. I'll give the buyer the Curse and everyone will be happy!

Terry, you are right, the paying crowd for this genre of ride is slim. But this is a quality ride and that fact alone will help sell this vehicle. And I knew I was building it "nice" - it's my nature.

I reckon I will probably end up selling it for a few different reasons.

A.) The Cash.
B.) I am out of ROOM to build this coupe.
C.) The Cash.
D.) You nailed it earlier... things I would like to change. But rather than redo this one, I would rather start over.

And if I didn't make it clear earlier with this coupe build, this is a full blown (perhaps read more into that once I get 10K in my hands...), painted, traditional, old school, slammed, hot rod build.

Thanks for everyone's input and letting me bounce this idea off of you.

And Mark, yes, you can even have a new sweatshirt. But I get to pick it out and you HAVE to wear it. One time, in public and be photographed with said sweatshirt on.
