Man dies while driving Tesla

Terry and John have some good points... Gary, not sure.
I think driver training is key here. The driver "aids" should be for freak accidents like getting something in your eye which caused a moment of distraction or something weird like that. Not because you are messing with the touch screen playing with your wifi connection or something stupid like that.

Everyone should have to drive a truck/trailer combo and be proficient at backing too.

Right on the money here.
I was taught to drive by dad in a Mack B61 Thermodyne, with 4 speed crash box, 2 speed joey box, 2 speed diff and no power steering. I still remember having my arm crooked through the steering wheel, double shuffle on the clutch and playing with 3 gearsticks. He said you cant go for your licence till you can run every gear without grinding. When i went for my test (in 1979) he put a 30' trailer on the back and i had to reverse it down an alley with 2' clearance each side.

There's a definite need for driverless cars for the very elderly. These new-fangled cars will be probably safer than having the old geezer/blue-hair drive the car themselves.

Ask me how I know!

Ha! All have good points, but I don't think we need to turn the clock back to 1964 just because one idiot got himself killed in a self driving car. When something is built idiot proof, we just build a better idiot.

I agree, I'm not suggesting we do that either. I think we need to consider tougher "testing" and maybe more often testing to renew a licence. People shouldn't rely on the car to do the driving. If they are safer, great, but people still need to drive them. If we want driverless cars that might be the future but in the mean time drivers still need to focus on the task of driving. All these safety features are great except when you already don't pay attention and just count on the car to make the driving choice. Just seams like asking for trouble to me

It wouldn't happen but considering all the auto deaths every year licensing should be on par with the FAA and pilot's licenses. You PROVE that you can pilot the type of vehicle you want to drive.

But then again it would take away my freedom to kill something.

There will continue to be ambiguities in self driving cars, which lessens their charm as the driver MUST continue to be diligent at all times!

In this case the car could not detect the rig. Why didn't it use it's car following radar n apply the brakes?

I see this death as an escape of total platform requirements, something not many engineers understand, and frankly, many do not want to.
