Well maybe not as spectacular as busting a crankshaft but I have now destroyed my second 9" differential! The first pushed the spanner/bearing for the carrier out of the side of the case. This one gave up the ghost this afternoon. Broken spider gears. I got home from Wisconsin, was going to go to lunch in the Stang, backed out of the driveway, put it drive... POP, no movement. Pushed back in the garage. Took it apart. Now if only the Jack A$3 that I bought a diff from on eBay will come thru!!!

If you part out yours I need a diff... on the other hand, I have a pretty strong BBF you might want! I have broken the studs on the axles, and two differentials now. Granted this was all junkyard stuff but still, I'm getting tired of breaking rear-ends. It easier to fix than engine however. Sorry for your pain!

You want to borrow my 9" chunk with a true trac locker and 4.11 gear?

Man that bites Craig, hope you can resolve the issues with the one you bought off E-bay.

I bought and paid for a 9" with 3.25 and traction lock from Currie, if it ever comes I will be in good shape. If not, I also have a Ford Motorsport 4.11 traction lock and a 3.70 open. Plus two broken open diff's. I should be able to cobble something together! I also have had a PM from another member on some parts.

yes me too, if it had shipped when it was supposed to I could have stuck in this afternoon! There is a cruise night on the square tomorrow night I was hoping to go to. Now I will just be a spectator...

I opened up the carrier... it's toast, the pin is toast and the spiders... well, they are shrapnel.

yeah, I think they broke or lost a tooth or something a while ago. It was making noise and I knew it was going. I was hoping it would hold on long enough for the new diff to arrive but no such luck. I guess it can sit on stands for a while. I probably shouldn't have been driving it but I knew it was junk. I'm glad it broke in front of my house and not out somewhere though.

Torque has a way of finding the weakest link...

Sorry about the breakage.

Yours too.

Well I do have gobs of torque, but I think the biggest issue has been that both the diff's I have broken were junkyard parts and probably worn out to begin with. Combine that with my lead foot, big block and wide tires and it's a recipe for destruction!

well against my wife's wishes and probably my doctor too, I checked out the diff. Gear contact pattern, back-lash, run-out and (pulled pinion bearing section out) pre-load are all in Ford spec. I decided to put it in. It was hard enough to do in the past but a real challenge with a broken foot. I wrapped my cast in an old t-shirt and duct taped it so it wouldn't get dirty. I did get it all done before the wife and kids got home. Wife wasn't too mad! My foot is killing me now though, I think it has swollen inside the cast, but the car is back together!!!
I took it for a short drive, sounds okay. I think he did a good job, all parts looked new. Now I have to sort out what speedo gear I need to get MPH correct.
