Mustang 50th - Charlotte attendees

Back at the hotel after driving by ZMAX where the cruise was leaving from. It sure looked like more than 850 cars. They covered the cruise (start) briefly on the local news and made note of it being affected by the rain coming in right now.

We stopped by section 19 (VMF section) over in the MORE area and spent about an hour looking at cars and checking out the 'rare cars' and 428CJ covered tent adjacent and talked to a restorer MrGem knows who was there. I also saw an interesting car, a fastback with a modular engine in it and it had a 'StangFix.com' metal data plate where the normal fender stamping is. No owner around but the owner's first name was Jerry so I don't know if that's the same as the Jerry who posts on here or not.

The deteriorating weather and the cruise found the place pretty much empty by the time we headed back through the tunnel to the infield and Gate 26 and out to the overflow area. Cool and windy but overall a great day to enjoy Mustangs.

Sorry I've missed you guys. I saw LarryG's car in the MORE area yesterday, but no one was around. The mrs and I have hooked up with JonK and his wife Wed and today. Tomorrow we'll be at the Rare Cars tent in the MORE area around noon. Larry, would be happy to meet in person. Pat. it's kinda "customary" now for me to see you on an East coast trip isn't it?! LOL

I'll be posting pics tomorrow night when I finally get home. Honestly, I've taken shots of several of the very rare and significant cars and that's it. I really haven't scratched the surface of checking out all the cars!!

I was pretty disorganized so probably missed a lot of meetup opportunities. We tried shoving our way into Texas Roadhouse in the pouring rain but gave up on that and drove about three miles down 29 to a great little Chinese place called Oriental Dragon and got some tasty grub in ten minutes and no wait. Comedy of errors driving around the pouring rain in an unfamiliar car with windshield wipers that, well, didn't wipe much. MrGem did a great job though. Got back, didn't crash the car and pigged out on Chinese while watching a horrible male stripper movie on HBO. Fitting end to an otherwise interesting and memorable experience. Old farts are easy to please I guess.

I'll be back in August for the mini-feed and will talk Vince into bringing that brand new '68 Shelby clone. Looking forward to hitting the East Coast again and enjoying their warm hospitality. Happy birthday to my little D-coder, born today in 1964 in good old Dearborn.

Stopped at the Scott Drake booth to look at parts and pick up a catalog, wife FORCED me to take a pick with the car model. Yes those are water bottles in my jacket pockets...

Time to get some STANGFIX hats so we can find / spot each other
at events. (you know, of course, that's Toni's bright idea !!!)

Been a great show until today's rain. Got to talk to Larry and his daughters yesterday, briefly met Pat (cam machinist) today in his hotels parking lot. Saw Jon's car multiple times yesterday but no Jon. Pretty sure I saw
Jerry's car but didn't see him either.

Hey, send some of that rain to Utah. Been too dry here for too long.

Looks like fun.

On my way in from Salisbury now back to park in row 16 of MORE. I think Donald Farr is going to be in the rare cars tent at MORE lot at noon to sign books, I've got one to be signed. I'll be wearing the same Music City MC tan jacket as in the Scott Drake pic above and black pants. Look forward to meeting. Anyone in for a meet up for dinner after show close near the mall area across I-85, plenty of places to eat.

Made it back home this afternoon after calling it early due to rain and cold. There was a TON to see and do at the event and the surrounding area. If no one else took advantage of the tour at the Dennis Carpenter plant you just don't know what you missed..WOW! The Carpenters have an AWESOME display of cars and advertising memorabilia upstairs at the main building. They also have a killer museum in a building in the back. We took the tour through the packing/final assembly area which took about 15 minutes. After spending at least 45 minutes upstairs with those cars we went around back for the plant tour. That never happened due to spending so much time in the museum. They were also selling off some of their collection duplicates and NOS parts. I picked up a pair of NOS 65/66 headlight doors for $50. Heck, repops cost that much!

The largest group of cars I looked at all week were parked in the MORE area. The wife and I spent quit a bit of time at the various displays, vendors and activities. I intended to look at the cars in the main infield display area today, but the weather took car of that. I did see a few interesting cars there each day we walked through. Here's some pics I snapped over the past few days:

That's all the pics I took. :(

p.s. I was indeed standing just out of the picture when Jon got his photo taken. I also happen to know that wasn't a water bottle in his pocket...he told that poor girl he had candy in his pocket and she could reach in for it!! LOL

looks like it was a great time, wish I could have been there but I am enjoying the pics!
thanks for sharing

It seems Thursday turned out to be a good day to arrive. We walked into an empty Embassy Suites and right up to the credential table and had our goodie bag and credentials and were out of there in five minutes. We did have to park in the overflow area for display cars but that was OK since we could spend an hour in the swap meet on the way to gate 26 :)

Overall, my impressions have been positive. We were totally saturated by the display cars and it was certainly a thrill to be looking at all the vintage (our primary interest) iron while hearing and seeing the cars on the track circling us and getting a close-in view of the cars navigating the infield road course. Most of the cars on the track Thursday appeared to be late model but there were a few pretty quick 65-69 models amongst them.

I'm posting from the hotel today as I gave my credentials to Mr. Gem's BIL, a local guy who included us into his motorcycle 'gang' for dinner last night uptown, so he could take in the festivities today before heading back to Maryland for Easter. Unfortunately, Teebone didn't feel up to traveling with us so we're keeping him in the loop via phone.

When MrGem gets back, I'm going to try to find the VMF parking area and see if we can't meet up with some forum members.

It sure is nice being only a mile or so from the venue. It's so easy to get to the Gate 26 access from here. Plenty of parking space and no worries about dings and dents to the car. We did see one late model Mustang Cobra in the lot which looked like war on the front end with a dent in the hood and front bumper support that looked like a light pole or trailer hitch got it. Expensive!

We spent some time at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant bar last night which was a few steps from the hotel and found many Mustang owners there, as well as a contingent of visiting Australian enthusiasts this morning who are staying at the hotel. I thought I traveled far coming from California....ha!

So far, I haven't run into any forum members but hope everyone is having a good time. Wish I had an extra 250 as I would have loved to get some video of Teebone's 'vert out on the track. Man, that looks like fun!

Anyway, good luck to everyone and safe travels home!

Dang it...I was hoping to meet you Pat. I was parked with the VMFer's (Indian Fire 69 Mach1) thur and fri. You've given me mucho advice over the years, going back to the early days of VMF....oh well, maybe next time....

Looks like a great time back there in the east. :thum
There were only 4 SFers at the Vegas show... :dun

Wow, only four? I would have thought LV would be overrun by SF'ers and I was just being weird going back east. I did it mainly for Vince.

Regarding missing other folks, I'm so sorry that happened and blame myself for not being more active on the forums and getting things set up. I've been away from the Mustang scene for a few years and going to Charlotte really injected some interest back into the mix. Coupled with that I'm so bad at names Toni, or maybe it was Glenn had to tell me who Ponyman66 was :rr , as an example.

Did I tell the story about how I got into the show after Glenn's BIL used my credentials on Friday? Ha, crazy story involving WalMart, Chick Filet and a red sharpie in the Chick Filet bathroom. :thum

Anyway, good memories, even with the rain, and I can see from the pix shared by others that there was a bunch of stuff I missed, or did see and it didn't register. I think 'overwhelming' would have been a good word. Pretty amazing collecting all that Mustang 'stuff' into one place at one time. Happy to have been around to experience it.
