My classic car dilemma time

janschutz

Corn Hauler
I only have classic cars which in the past has been fine. I had time for projects and maintenance. But with more time need to take care of elderly parents, the family farm and the body not so young anymore. It is time to get a new vehicle and I might need to get rid of at least on of the 68 mustangs and/or the 59 truck.

I am now to the point of being overburdened so that is what has prompted this decision.

If only these repo parts would last. My truck lights are out again (the last 2 light switch have failed, one right out of the box). The brake light switch on one mustang has failed again and the other mustang the rear shock rubber has failed in a year. And don't get me started on what this ethanol gas is doing to our rubber lines and carburetors.

Now it is time do decide what we need as a vehicle. I have 2 pickups at the farm so I guess I just need a commuter car. Do need something fancy, just a good reliable car with enough storage for tools/saws for the farm.

Thanks for being my sounding board.

PS I personalty do not want to get rid of a stang but only if it makes economic since.

Buy a small cheap used Honda accord/ civic. Like 2000 to 2005, gets good millage and you buy one for 3-5k

Those do not fit the need to hold some tools requirement. Julie just told me she want something that is taller than a car like a Jeep (not to say it has to be a Jeep. She wants to be up to see better. She said NO MINIVANS!

Why am I thinking of American Pickers all of a sudden ?

Go get one of these - my office neighbor had one - very unique and rare. two stroke engine and predecessor to Audi.

John,

Not sure of your budget but my wife, much like yours, wanted something that sat up a bit higher than a car as well. She had a Chrysler Aspen for a long time and had grown accustomed to sitting up high. That thing had the 5.7 Hemi engine and just gulped gas. We ended up getting a Jeep Cherokee with a V6 and she LOVES it. I like it as well. Doesn't have the torque or HP of the Aspen but it's not too bad and the gas mileage is great. Even in Chicago traffic she gets upper 20's all the time. This thing will be in our fleet for a LONG time. This will be my youngest son's high school car in four or fives years.

Hers is an upgraded model called the Trailhawk. It has a slightly lifted suspension among other mainly cosmetic additions. I'm sure at this point there are likely a glut of these Jeeps coming off lease programs and such so the used market probably has many too offer as well.

We got a 2012 Durango new with the 5.7 Hemi. Dodge fixed the MPG issue. My neighbor has a 2nd gen and it slurps gas.

I bet you could get a decent deal on one with the pentastar V6.

All the Map cars make SUVs that can be had at a decent price. My kids have a hibrid Highlander that gets 30mpg.

That is far from my favorite Jeep product, but I hear good things about it. To echo Terry's last comment, my 18 year old niece just picked up a year old Jeep Patriot at a really cheap price. It was a rental fleet return in immaculate shape, with the remainder of the factory warranty. It should be a good car for many years to come.

This morning, she said she like the looks of the Ford Escape. Anyone have one of these?

Thanks for all the recommendations, we will start looking next week.

She thinks we should get rid of the truck and the diamond blue Mustang. I just do not think I will get too much for them. The 59 f-100 drives great with the crown vic front end and new drive train but it still is an unfinished Project. and the Diamond Blue 68 Coupe has a badly rusted roof under the vinyl top.

My wife has 2015 ford escape. She loves it, we got it with ecoboost 4 cylinder. It has enough power and gets about 26 mpg on the street.

I hope it wasn't a rental I have ever driven!!!

John,
If you sell the diamond blue coupe, any idea of what you would LIKE to get for it?

+1
I switched over to National after nearly 20 years with Budget just so I could pick my next victim from all the available cars on the lot. It's pretty cool to have your pick of any ride there. I try to select something different every time. And yes, I put them to the test for acceleration and such. ;)

that is a cool feature they have to let you pick. For a while Hertz had the option to pick from certain cars if you are Gold status.
I love cars with the hand e-brake in the middle of the seats and a traction control off button!
