My first Mustang - 1981

When I was a teenager, my Dad said he would match me dollar for dollar when it came time to buy a car. By the time I turned 16, I ended up saving around $1,600. So with his match, I had just over $3,200. I remember waking up every Sunday morning and going through the Washington Post classifieds looking for '67 - '69 Firebirds and Camaros. My Dad and I would head out Sunday morning and make the rounds looking at cars. We spent weeks looking for a good canidate.

Mustangs weren't even on my radar, but we came across a solid looking 67 coupe for $1,600. I ended up driving it home for $1,200. It was a solid body coupe with worn out paint, 289-2V, automatic, 4 wheel drum breaks and hubcaps.

I had enough money left over for a nice paint job and some Cragar wheels. Over time, I redid the interior, replacing the carpet, reupholstering the seats and repainting all of the panels. Man, I kept so much ArmorAll on those seats, that you would slide right out everytime you hit the brakes.

Wow! Good thing I didn't find a Camaro, I might have grown up to be White Trash!

Very cool. Can we now see some 2010 pics of you with the car? Thank goodness you're not "white trash".....like me....

I sold that car in 1985 for $3,500, right after I bought my fastback (that I still have today) for $3,200 - '68 302-2v, 4 speed, front disc brakes, styled steel wheels.

Oh yea, I can still wear those pant too (NOT).

Cool pics. Thanks for sharing.

So you're the guy that started the "bad arse" crossed arms pose. :10

That all sounds so familiar! That is where I found my car as well.

Cool story, and very cool that you still have pics. I basically have found 1 picture of my first hot rod ... a '72 Dodge Charger with a 383 big block. The only pics I have of my first '66 coupe are a couple half car shots during the painting of it, and I don' think I have a single picture of my '68 Cougar.

Great story.

I unfortunately went with a Camaro for my first car until I saw the light and made the switch to Mustangs.
Spent more time trying to keep it running then driving it.

my 1st car was a 67 coupe also, in 1981... I was 15, I paid $500. It took a lot more work and money. I didn't have any cool pose pictures either.
