need a measurement from a 64-66 steering column...

if anybody has a bare column laying around with the wheel off i need to know the overall diameter of the upper housing where the steering wheel meets the housing. i was going to put my steering wheel on the 69 today, but when i slid the adapter on, it is smaller & you can see the turn signal assembly all the way around (looks like a$$). i think this adapter may have been packaged wrong as its labelled as 67-69 mustang/shelby. i suspect it's actually a 64-66 adapter, so if the measurements match up. i may have a NIB moto-lita adapter for sale....

Steve, there's a smaller ('65-early'67) and a large (late '67~'70). For my 6 bolt Motolita wheel I got an adapter from LeCarra up in NE TN (Oneida, TN 37841) and there are 2 sleeves big/small that interchange on the adapter. When I changed my column to the larger '68 they just sent me a collar and charged me ~$10. I can bring the whole assembly over with both collars for you to look at/test fit, they probably carry something similar for your wheel.

LeCarra lists them as 3.60" OD and 4.10" OD:

I'll try to get a couple of pics with the adapter and both collars so it'll make sense.

yep, this adapter is for the earlier column as it measures 3 5/8. it's the original moto-lita brand adapter, so i don't think there is a changeout sleeve like the 6 bolt version. guess i'll post some pics in the for sale section if anyone is interested. thanks!!

Here's a couple pics of mine if it helps, they don't make 'em like this for the 9 hole wheel you have I take it?

By the way, if you don't have a horn button can you use the big one in the pic? it's too large on the back for the small hole in my 6 bolt wheel, I'll bring it with me next trip if you want it, the horse & bars sticker is loose so you can change it to something else if you like.

heres mine. the tuned down portion on the bottom fits into the collar on the column housing. it's in the for sale section.

Steve, could you just make a collar like the ones in my pic for yours? they're just held in place by a set screw you don't see and really just cover the gap. As in my pic my center section (adapter) stayed the same and the collars just slip on/off and cover the space, they're the same ID.

probably could, but have enough on my plate right now to fool with it. things are fixing to get busy here really soon. i have to go look at a 32 chev tomorrow that may come in after the 39 is gone & i scheduled a 36 ford coupe last week. add in a few bikes & the fabrication stuff & i'll be pretty short on time to do anything for myself...

well, who would have thought... went by metal supermarket today while i was out & they had a short cutoff of hot rolled steel tubing with the exact inside & outside diameters to modify this adapter. all i had to do was cut a 3/8" thick piece off, & dress the edges. had to sand off a little of the textured paint on the adapter & it was a press fit. took about 15 min.

after addition of the spacer ring & a little spraycan semi gloss black:

There ya' go Steve, no reason to start all over now, I was going to bring by my two rings to see if they would work and just get another from LeCarra for you. What was the ID & OD out of curiosity?
Thanks for getting me addicted to Metal Supermarket, seems like I'm in there now every week I'm home...
