New Job

Thanks again guys. Today I was emailed the official notice of hiring, which also contained my salary and job contact. The great news is they're starting me at a higher salary than first quoted. It's also an instant pay raise from my current job (where I've been for a total of 12 years!).

Just an update on how things have been going. In a word, GREAT! I spoke with my chief (first), last Friday and personally gave my resignation advising him that this Friday would be my last day. Everyone has been very supportive and congratulatory about my new position. I'm sure there's a group that will be throwing a "going away party"....AFTER I leave. Eh, that's okay.

I just had to share the most wonderful way ever to close out someone's final week at work. While it's not unusual for people to mill about biding time until that last day finally rolls around, that's not me. Today a call was dispatched about a car involved in a collision (at the time reportedly a single car collision), in which the vehicle had exited the interstate over an embankment. They also advised the driver was trapped and the car was on fire. As a unit relatively close I responded to the scene and was there several minutes later, right behind two patrol units. The car was severely damaged and the entire front end engulfed in flames (which were 10-15 feet high!). The driver was still pinned inside and the fire was intruding into the passenger compartment. The other two officers were using their small portable extinguishers to knock down the flames as I arrived and proceeded to do the same. A private ambulance had stopped on the interstate side and one of their folks climbed down to the car with a rechargeable water fire extinguisher and was spraying the driver to keep her wet.

About the time our extinguishers emptied, a Pye-Baker fire and safety company van pulled up. He opened the side door and it was full of charged extinguishers. The driver started throwing them down the embankment to us so we could keep the flames knocked down. Every time we had to change out an empty extinguisher the flames would flash back up. We kept at it, keeping the fire in check until the fire department arrived and was finally able to fully extinguish the blaze and extricate the driver. All told we emptied about 20 extinguishers between the three of us. The driver was alert and conscious, but did sustain some burns. The wind from the interstate had also been blowing down towards the drivers side and helped keep most of the smoke and flames from her. We we getting most of the smoke and heat coming at us on the down wind side!

Everything came together in the right place at the right time in order for her to survive. I was covered with dry chemical from the extinguishers and stunk to high heaven! It sure was a great way to finish out my last week....and I still have four more days to go!!

Pretty awesome tale of heroism on all your parts. That's a very lucky lady.

Thanks a lot guys. The in car video from one officers car made it to the local news. Here's a link if you want to see a small portion of how bad the fire got. My car is the one seen pulling in from the side shot (and guess who the grey haired officer in the video is? When I was running back towards the camera it was to get another extinguisher laying on the ground by the car the video came from.)
