Personalized vs vintage plates, wwsd?

Oh great oracle, I am considering getting new plates. Texas allows registration of 1967 plates, which are plain white with black writing and 1967 date I can get a set lots of places. I can also get a vanity/personalized plate with something cool like " ko67 " or " 12nchr " on it. Regardless of the message, Are vanity plates a douchbag move? Should I go with vintage plates or vanity plates. Thanks, kevin.

Kevin,

Here's my opinion on the "vanity vs. vintage" license plates.

Vintage plates are for period correct cars only. If you've got a vintage plate and a TKO/T5 5 speed transmission... you're confused/mentally challenged.

Vanity plates are better suited for non-period correct cars where the owner feels the need to make some sort of statement... just be sure the statement is appropriate for the car/owner or else you'll be laughed at.

For instance there's a POS '67 Coupe running (sort of) around my town that is an absolute embarrassment to our community. It's got to be one of the worst examples of a classic Mustang daily driver I've ever seen.... and I've seen it a LOT.... as it always seems to be parked on the side of the road broken down. I believe the owner get's it running long enough to cruise down for another 6pack of beer and then it dies on the return trip and he just leaves it wherever it's broken. I've only seen it driving once. Open headers and the motor was coughing and wheezing while spewing a steady stream of white smoke. Yuck.

License plate reads ITZ FAZT

I'm sure it is buddy, but only when compared to the shopping cart you've been pushing around with all of your belongings weighing the cart down.

In your particular case Kevin I think vintage plates would suit the car better than vanity plates.

almost a perfect description of Rick (Fast68back's) car, with its 1968 Hemisfair license plates...

Thanks for the excellent advice and analysis. I will assume that the specific plates dont change the analysis? Thanks again, oh wise one.

Man, hope no one here has vintage plates with a cd player in their car. Freakin' posers.

Yep, guess I should trade in my YOM plates since there is an AOD and CD/SIRRUS hiding in my '66.........maybe I should log off and sulk....

When the YOM plates became available, I ditched my personalized plates. To me it doesn't matter what's under the hood, or what mods you made to the car (unless you have turned the car into a ricer/ghetto sled). The car is still a classic vehicle, so it just looks right to have the black and yellow plates (or whatever the vintage plates look like in your area) on the car. Classic cars just don't look right with modern plates on 'em.

My decision on this issue was dictated entirely by finances. When I used to run vanity plates on my old 67 Shelby, they cost roughly $70 per year. Here in Ohio I can run vintage plates with a one time fee ( I think about 30 bucks) and they don't have to be renewed for 50 years.
Now, if I can only make myself keep a car that long...

I run vintage plates because I am not vain enough for vanity plates and the modern plate looks pretty gay, dont get me wrong Kev, looks fine on your car....

I actually decided to run the '68 plates in hopes that douchetards would realize what they were and not feel the need to ask me what year my car is. My assumption was wrong......as usual

Now THAT is funny. I think I deserved that.

So does that make me a douchebag?
