Ran my first "official" half marathon last Saturday. Started running in June, not sure why because I always hated it. I had run the distance (13.1) miles a few times alone and had gotten in a 9:50 pace groove that felt good and was consistent. I knew I would pick it up a bit amongst a big group and was thinking it would be cool to finish in under two hours. Wasn't really attempting it as I am bad to come out of the gate strong and get wore down. Paced an 8:44 and finished in 1:56:xx. Except for the last mile my pace never varied more than +/- 15 seconds. At mile 12 I was able to pick it up and paced the last mile at 7:56. The best part is the twenty couple pounds I've lost. FTR, the guy who finished first finished in 1 hour 16 minutes. Dude was flying. The worst part about this is how I get re "I wonder if...." The thought of running for 4.5-5 hours is ridiculous to me but I'm actually contemplating a full marathon next fall. Gonna put in for a couple more halfs and maybe a 30K (18+ miles) in the spring to see if I want to do something as stupid as running a marathon.

Crazy but I'll tip my hat. I doubt I could run around the block before I said screw it.

Since nobody else has said it yet, good going Duane!! I used to hate running until I went to the Border Patrol Academy. After spending an hour in the mat room doing calisthenics I started looking forward to the next hour (running!). I know how much it takes to get motivated to push through! Again, good going! :thu :thu

Duane, that is awesome! An 8:44 pace for 12 miles and then 7:56 the last mile--finishing with gas still in the tank. :wor :wor

Congrats Duane!

Practicing running from owls?

I've been running with the boys for about the last six months but it's been slow going for me. Early on I developed some shin splint issues so I have to be very careful when trying to either increase the distance or pick up the pace. Makes me feel old really. The last pace ran I did in cross country years ago the coach told me run four miles at 5:15 per mile and I finished in 5:03 per mile. I couldn't get close to that these days if my life depended on it but that was 25 years and 100 pounds ago.

Ran a little over two miles today in the parking garage since it was our incline training day. My shins feel fine so I am starting to slowly push distance and pace some now. The boys want me to run a 5k with them but I am not that interested in racing these days...just using the track time to get in some cardio to help me with my next Krav test. The last test I took was over 2 hours and I really thought I was done when I hit the wall hard about half way through.

My boy Jeff is an animal on the track though. He's placed third overall in the last two 5k's they've run and he's 11 years old.

Shel, rest the shins and I highly recommend Asic Gel shoes. Been wearing them for years and since running have tried some NB and Saucony. The Gels are like clouds, hard to even wear a regular tennis shoe casually after running in those things.

You sound like my grandmother when she and her church friends would discuss their latest orthotic walking shoe find.

I need to get me a new pair of shoes, which Asics should I look at? Just everyday work sneaks, but I'll be standing all day.

Asics basically have 3 levels. You have.....drumroll............Asics then you have Asics Gel. In the Gel category (and they say Gel) you have the cushion either in the heel only, or heel and forefoot. The best way to tell if it's heel only or both is to turn the shoe upside down. You will see "Gel" imprinted in the sole in one or two locations. Oh yeah, the full Gel shoes are typically higher. I have always worn the shoes with the Gel cushion just in the heel. I haven't graduated to the full Gel yet but hear they are really the shit. Amazon typically has good deals but Kohls also typically has them on sale. The last pair I bought were being phased out and I found them at Kohl's for $25!!!! Kohl's will clearance some damn good shoes sometimes. What I run in now is the Kanbarra 6 and I think you can get them for a tad over $50. Very comfy.

I have worn this brand for probably 20 years. I've mixed in nike, reebok, nb, sketchers and who knows what else. I buy daily shoes CHEAP!! Asics always more comfortable but I was like a shoe is a damn shoe. Since running though, crazy how others feel. A lot of people like Saucony and the pair I've got are good for daily use but nowhere near my Asics.
