Re building back deck

Can't believe you chopped down those beautiful giant redwoods for your patio. For shame!
Especially in a climate that doesn't require such awesome wood for that kind of project. Then again, Cali probably doesn't even allow pressure treated wood. Gotta save those termites or whatever. Loonies! :p

Really....now you are calling us Columbians? ( no one here refers to the state as Cali) I am sure Mike wants to build a deck that will out last him, redwood is the natural choice. As for pressure treated lumber.....I have miles of pressure treated lumber in the ground here in California, filled with that nasty creosote.

Pressure treated beams have lasted 31 years. Building on them.
Redwood for deck. Should be the last deck I'll need.
I'm watching vids trying to decide on a clear sealer and I came across a good ol'boy advising applying used motor oil and diesel as a sealer. If it spills so what oil came from the ground so....:p

If you don't mind a little maintenance season to season by all means use a good wood oil over some chemical sealant/water-repellent. It will keep the wood in much better condition throughout damn near forever if you keep up with it. Only downside is the loss of using the deck for a few days each time you treat it while the oil seeps in and the surface drys up.
