Rear axle & third member removal

Craig... we all know you like to hit the pipe... but why not just use a seal puller?

Agreed. Get a seal puller and driver set. $15 that you'll only spend once and be glad you did.

Just a little update. Made my own seal puller out of some aluminum angle, plate and a piece of all thread. Worked like a charm. Had a seal driver set so installing the new seals went fine. Got the third member installed and the passenger side axle. Had a little trouble with the drivers side because the two sets of splines were not perfectly aligned. Put the car in gear and used a pry bar to tweak the clutch assembly a tad and the driver side axle slid in. Hope to button everything up this weekend.

Thanks for all the guidance everyone.

Bolting the backing plate to the axle

I'm not an expert, but I thought this was a neat thing to do. bolt the backing plate to the axle flange. I countersunk the holes on the backing plate, tapped the holes in the axle flange, then nutted the bolts. Now the backing plate will stay put if I ever have to remove the axles again! Hopefully never! lol
I had replaced my pinion seal, but it still leaking, so a third member may be something I'll want in the future, but I can live with a little leak for now, besides it's not streetworthy yet :(

Got the rear all buttoned up on Friday evening. Had the rear tires jacked up off the ground about an inch and let the car run in 4th gear for about 5 minutes and then in reverse for about the same time, then did four circles in both directions in the culd-sac before I took it out for a quick break-in drive. Seems to run smoothly. I'll take it easy for the next couple of trips just to make sure the gears mesh together well. Final specs to the swap are a post '67 stronger ribbed case with 3.80 trac-loc gears and 4-pinion nodular carrier with new Yukon 31 spline axles.

NICE! Glad it worked out.
