Rear Shocks

I have these stupid old shocks in the back that have that spring around them. I fill the car with gas and took her for a ride for the first time that way LAUGH. BOUNCY...simply embarrassing. I am almost broke from being on medical (start work next week) So I was thinking of buying 20 dollar shocks for now. Would you agree that that would be better than what I am dealing with. I am afraid these will ruin my new front shocks in short order.

Note: I did not buy new back shocks during my restore because I know I want the good ones. But this will not work. Thanks for your input.

the shocks wont change your ride height, only the ride.
You need to look at the leaf springs.
The springs on the outside of your shocks are probably helpers coz your leaf springs are buggered

should clarify, it sits fine. It bounces like the shocks are not even there.
Here is a pic of the stance

Pull a shock, if you can easily compress it, replace with cheap new ones for now. It'll get you by!

uh oh ... neither will easily compress and one started leaking oil. I have this felling I may need leafs as well in the future. I will start with the cheapys later today and get back here. I gues I could make Pics to prove it lol.

Lemme look in my garage, I have a set of KYBs on the shelf, if they are rear shocks you can have them for the price of shipping, less than $20 I would guess.

If they don't compress, then they still would not be doing their job. Did you give the rear the "bounce" test?

I'd still bet the shocks are shot.

One of them did not have a bolt on it. and the car bounced on the first drive and lodged next the spring binding it in the extended position. I discovered this with the tank removal and it required a jack under the car and then another under the shock just to move it to the hole. that is when I saw the dripping oil. I'll be right back and count the bounce.

LALALA Ok....SO I push down on the rear by hand, from there it comes up goes down comes up goes down and the stops up.

Remember....these are not standard shocks....they have the overload springs built in......compression by hand may not work. I normally bounce the car twice and let go. If it bounces more than a couple times with each a smaller bounce, replace. With leaking oil, I replace....period.

I am pushing with one hand and it is bouncing twice AND leaking LOL

Thanks you guys are great helpers. Off to the store now.

Scedd you are right. Here is the deal. I ended up buying shocks Gr2's. I had a set offered to me free if I paid shipping but I live close enough to NPD and I only have one more week of time off.

Get this. I took Those load levelers off and a cup of oil pored out of each one. THEN the rear settled with The exhaust one inch above the axle swallowing the rear tires. The springs were almost reversed , flat for sure.

Question. Do I want Mid eye?
Question. Bushings. Midolyne, Polyurethane or Prothane ?
Question. 1/2 or 9/16th? What size is already on the car?

Steer me right Please . I was thinking 1/2 inch Prothane with Mid Eye leafs.

What you really need to do is throw a pair of air shocks under the rear and pump them wayyyyyyy up and then throw some gigantic rear wheels/very wide tires that stick out about a foot and let 'er rip....lol. Whoops, had a throw back moment to the late 60's/early 70's. Hey, even the VW's had those....so they must have been cool... lol. :cry
