And believe it or not, it still isn't settled. For the last six years, Charles Williams' neighbors have been after him to stop repairing cars from his own personal garage. Jalopnik, Road and Track, and several other publications have picked up the story because it's as ridiculous as it sounds. After buying the garage and putting it on his own property so he and his friends could work and tinker on cars, Williams' neighbors have spent upwards of $50,000 to have it removed.

The reason behind the lawsuit? They claim Williams' is running an unlicensed repair shop and that it attracts to much noise and traffic. However, inspectors have found no violations with the garage. On top of that, Williams' even tried to obtain a license from the city to make his neighbors happy but the city said there's no reason for him to need one as what he's doing isn't illegal.

That didn't make anyone happy however. In 2014 the neighbors filed a lawsuit that just recently was heard by a judge. Luckily, it was mostly in Williams' favor. He does have to add speed bumps and a speed limit sign, though. And even though he more or less won...it cost him around $30,000 in legal fees. And it doesn't end there. The judge is still waiting to see if the garage violates the city building codes and permits. If it does, Williams' will be fined $100 a day. If it doesn't the neighbors still plan to appeal.

Williams' was disabled in a freak construction accident that left him with no legs and wheelchair bound. He also lives on $800 a month since he is no longer employed. The garage was built simply for enjoyment and the love of working on cars - something he still manages to do even with a disability. The neighbors have said they will take this to the Delaware Supreme Court, they've even gone so far as to put up cameras to record Williams' property, as well as a sign threatening him with death. All over a freaking garage.

There IS a bright side. People that have heard of Williams' story have already contributed to the GoFundMe set up for the case, which will hopefully help with court fees and avoid him going completely bankrupt from the fight to save his hobby. Hopefully it gets resolved soon...

Yup. My neighbor abandoned his house. The roof is covered in a tarp and a tree is down from a storm in July, and the grass is knee high. Windows busted out and such. No one has seen them. Even had a private investigator come by looking for them. My father in law is going to see if he can buy the property. Not sure what is worse, the abandoned house or my mother in law living next door.

I swear there's people whose only means for existing is to make others as miserable as them.
Yep. There are many varieties. This looks like just a couple angry old women with nothing better to do. He is playing his part very well as the innocent victim but I'm sure he has fun messing with them as well. I just hope he doesn't get screwed over by a falling out with one of his "friends" who would come forward and reveal that he does get some cash for working on or allowing others to use his garage. At $800 a month income he's getting cash from somewhere to keep afloat. But looking at his set-up, I'm not sure he is hurting anyone. That garage is set way back. Folks just need to get a life.

MIL living next door by a factor of infinity.

I'm guessing he's getting some cash somewhere. $800 a month doesn't go veryr far.

I would love to have a garage like that.

IIRC in one of the interviews he said that he built the garage with money he got from selling the "front property"... to his future shitty neighbors. Not sure if he was disabled before or after he built it, so maybe $800 is his income now but has not always been his income.

I'm very afraid of growing up and finally getting to move into a house, only to discover that my neighbors suck... :(

That's why I live in the country.

My neighbors are at least 500' away.

We all have similar hobbies too.

Having decent neighbors isn't that hard to accomplish. The Golden Rule goes a long way. That and communication. Become friends early and when something goes astray it's much easier to resolve. I am still friends with neighbors from multiple moves ago. It's not uncommon.

There's a small engine shop on the corner of my street. Then there's my shop, which was used for earth moving equipment. Most of the properties have some sort of large building. The guy across the street has a couple of projects and a 69 el camino. My only concern is the new house behind my shop. They haven't said anything, but I'm not out there much.

Set off some Tannerite and see if they're friendly.

I used to think that.
