taking it in tomorrow

I am taking the Mustang to my buddy's shop tomorrow.

Finally said screw it and been talking about it for too long so going to get her painted.

Getting a pretty good deal price wise. He's going to cut the rust out of the front corners of the doors for me and weld in the new metal, plan to save those because the repop doors don't fit well at all. We also have to fix a few other minor door ding type things. Probably going to buy a repop hood instead of spending hours trying to fix a dent on the front of this one.

While it's there, I am going to have him install the disc brake kit for me. I could probably figure it out but what would take him four hours to do would take me four days so I figured for another couple of hundred I'd just get them to help me out with that one.

Looking forward to having it painted and having the disc brakes done.

Spend the extra and get the ford tooling hood. Very impressed with the one on just put on my 65. Only repop part that didnt need hours of work to make right!

My buddy has done several old Mustangs for clients and that is basically what he told me. He said the hoods are fine and he's never had any issues.

The doors and front fenders however are another story and the repops have a very poor fit. Luckily my doors are "fixable" and the fenders on my car are in great shape.

Nothing like a brand new paint job. Do you have an ETA as to how long it is going to take? Oh and the fun after the paint, then you get to worry about door dings all over again. :po I only wash my 07 once a month or maybe two, but I always seem to find another chip or ding on it when I do. Oh how I love the smell of a new paint job. :ecit fd

ETA is roughly a month.

I am more worried about getting a scratch in my garage than I am anywhere else...my 8 1/2 yo boys are pretty good to not bump into it after being threatened with death numerous times but their friends not so much.

Thinking about buying one of the car covers that helps prevent scratches, etc. to put on it when it's in the garage. It would help also if I got the wife to park on the side next to the boys' toy box and I parked on the other side but I kind of like the side I usually park on because my work bench is right there in front of the car.

I still drive the Mustang to work once in a blue moon but not near as often these days. We've had a number of cars that have been broken into here at the office. My guess is it's punk kids because for the most part they bust out a window and snag a GPS or radar detector and things of that nature.

Most often though, these days I only drive the Mustang on the weekends or other days off. I don't drive it anywhere that has shopping carts for certain. I take it to Aikido frequently on Saturday mornings but I can park it right outside where I can look through the window and keep an eye on it. I also take it to the local club's "street meet" sometimes on Saturday nights and things of that nature. I've never put it in their charity car show because it looked too crappy. With the engine bay cleaned up and now about to have new paint...I just might stick it in the show this fall :)

I would definitely invest in a car cover after the paint job, especially with a shared garage and kids around. It'll also mean a little more work as the car will need to be clean before putting the cover on. I'd also ask your painter if the paint will need a certain curing period before using a car cover. Looking forward to a lot pics when you get it done.

The good news is the paint shop guy is a buddy of mine so I'll be stopping by to take some progress pictures here and there...his shop is only about 10 minutes from my office. I stop by from time to time to visit anyway when I have a free day at lunch time...they always have some sort of interesting project going on.

He would be cool with me coming over to do some of the work myself with his direction of course if I had the time but we are pretty busy at work right now so swinging a couple days off would be tough. This year is promising to be very busy because one of the members of the family that I work for passed away so I am basically up to my eye balls in estate and gift tax type work right now in addition to my regular job duties. If that weren't the case I'd have put off this job for a few months then I could have taken some days and done some of the work myself.

Depending on how things are rolling along...I might still be able to swing a Friday off to work on the brake conversion.

However, the weather still isn't the greatest for driving right now so I figured now is a good time and the car should be back on the road by middle of March. March and April are the best months of the year for driving, LOL!

Well the good news is I got it dropped off today at lunch. The bad news is I froze my butt off when we were standing around outside looking at the car thanks to the wind out there today, LOL!

:WOP

If you forgot your camera the day you dropped her off, you better get your %@$# together for your future visits to the shop..

I was just dropping off...not much to see today. My "before" pictures are in the gallery already, LOL!

But as it gets going work wise I'll either swing by and take some progress pictures or get my buddy to snap a few for me.

I hope everything goes as planned for you. Too many damn horror stories about paint jail. Seeing as you know everybody, that probably won't be a problem. Best of luck! I know I'm jealous. I can't wait to do the body work and paint to mine!

you run into paint jail when you use a collision type shop that knows your Stang is not your daily car. All my buddy does is restoration work...he doesn"t even do collision work actually refuses to do it so all the cars in his place are peoples toys.

Good for you! Glad to hear that.

Is this going to be a "mask & shoot" type job or is the car being disassembled (glass, trim, body panels, etc. removed)?

I believe they are planning to take the fenders off and most of the trim off. I've never seen them paint fenders with them actually on a car so I am pretty sure their general practice is to remove them and paint them on a saw horse.

Probably will just mask off the actual glass but to be honest I didn't ask.

I know they have to remove the doors to cut out the rust and they plan on painting the trunk, door jams, etc.

I had sent Doug a PM with the answer, LOL!

But I would imagine that John doesn't care if I share his name.

Guy by the name of John Evans that runs "Vintage Restorations of The Woodlands".

I've seen about every kind of car you can imagine roll through there. He has done work on a good number of Mustangs though and owns a '65 himself that has been in his family since it came off the show room floor.

Ever have one of those days where you thought an about 4 inch square spot of rust ended up being much much worse than you thought?

Needless to say my passenger door is ready for the scrap bin. They started checking it out and thought about cutting some of the bad metal out then just gave up and said its beyond hope. I would tend to agree.

On the plus, a friend of mine wanted my hood for a beater he has. I wasn't going to use it so I told him I would just give it too him. I checked and he said he's probably got 2 or 3 doors shells in his barn so now we are going to trade. Good thing because I don't want to use a reproduction door if I can avoid it.

Luckily the drivers side door was fine for the most part and just needed a small patch cut out and new metal welded in where they typically rust out in the front corner.
