Short term: get the car driving, reliably and safely, with a few cosmetic fixes to hold me over. Long term: no plan yet! Thanks for the welcome!

Cool car!!! When you start looking to put a 390 back in it you'll have lots of help here. There happen to be a few 67 390 fastbacks floating around the bay area.

I have a tire rub issue too. I need to roll the left front fender or find a size just smaller than FR60-14. Anybody know what that might be? 20570-r14?

225 width should work fine. I have 225/60/15s on mine and there's no rubbing.

So, apparently registering a car in CA that has never been titled in 43 years takes more paperwork then usual. NY state did not title cars before the 1970's. CA is a very difficult state in which to register a car like this. That said, the DMV gave me a pathway forward. I need to submit a statement of facts, a bond-in-lieu, and get some documentation from another state. Thankfully the eBay seller is straight up and willing to sign some more documents, including an affidavit.

In summary, my CA registration will be the second registered ownership of the car, and the first title. Not bad considering the possible negative outcomes. And I'll have a complete chain of ownership.

Meanwhile, the original radiator is leaking, and I'm replacing the chokeless ford carb with an electric choke Holley. 450 cfm should do fine for a 302 according to my math.

Registered! Sort of...

Well, I managed to get a 2-month temp tag for California. They want me to attempt to contact the original owner with hopes that they can provide a dealer invoice!? Understanding that its not likely, they will accept if I send this person a letter via certified mail that is either: 1) Rejected 2) Accepted but Ignored, or 3) responded to via a letter back to me. Any one if these three results are acceptable by the DMV. Kind of goofy, but I'm not complaining. They spent 20 minutes decoding my vin and verifying the year/make/model. There was no safety inspection of any kind.

I ran into another issue. Above 3000 rmp, I think I am flooding the engine. She starts to choke, until a complete stall. Then, she starts right back up and is perfectly happy idling, until I apply power. I learned this via my 9 mile trip to the dmv that took an hour. The carb has a vaccuum leak anyhow, so its going to be replaced. I can't think of any other possible cause. I know with airplane engines, its timing, fuel, or temps. The timing has been addressed. P's and T's all checked out, so its got to be a fuel problem. We'll see.

One final note: two people offered to buy the car today, completely unsolicited. Its funny, I used to drive an Aston Martin Vantage, and never had that happen :confu

OK, I am going to address a few things.

1- I am formerly from CA and really not that far away, just ask Abe!
2- Both my cars are from CA and both are very happy here in SoUtah, especially when I drive them to Knott's. Hehehehe
3- Maybe you are having Johnpro DMV luck. If it gets too bad we can reg it in Utah and then transfer it to CA for you...Crap did I say that out loud?
4- The above quoted issue is within your vacuum advance. Unplug that hose from the distributor and then plug both ends. It isn't the official correct fix, but it works on both my cars. My solution after putting many many hours of work and trial and error into just that issue is to switch to mechanical advance.

Welcome to the forum, you are in good hands with the NorCal guys, but the rest of us don't bite either. I may have some parts taking up room in the garage, like a stock dizzy with a pertronix in it and a water pump. I'll look.

Some lessons learned: Everything looks better on eBay. Don't take your wife on the first drive,
some good advice for future mustang owners that use the search feature..

Welcome to the Mustang world! for the record you got the best year :)

GL with working out the bugs from it sitting dormant for years, best advice is here on stangfix.

you're already dealing with the carb, I would check out a new gas tank as well, there not much money, I'd put money on the original being full of crap even if the PO rinsed it out.

Mel, thanks for that info. I'll try it this weekend. The carb still needs fi in' since I can hear a vacuum leak, but I'll give this a try as well. Then on to the fuel pump and tank if needed. Thanks guys for the help. It makes a difference.

Use carb cleaner around the base of the carb. If the car idle changes as you spray, you will know where the leak is. You can also use starting fluid.

Hopefully you will be able to remove it and reseal it.
