The 5.0 is back! 2011 5.0L GT

So much for the embargo on information pertaining to the 2011 Ford Mustang GT. First, we found out about the 412 horsepower in the 5.0L and within 24 hours of that, we knew about the 390 lb-ft of torque. Well, Mustang lovers got a Christmas present this morning thanks to the disregard for legal fine print; a picture of the 2011 Mustang GT and an engine shot of the new 2011 5.0 V8 has hit the internet.

That motor would look sweet in a 65-70!

Honestly though, after custom ordering my 06 and all the problems I've had with it and the seemingly poor overall quality, I wouldn't buy another new one. 412/390 numbers or not.

What kind of problems? The only issue that I have had with my 07 was the battery died over the 4th of July weekend. It was replaced under warranty. But then again my 07 is not a DD, I have had it just over 3 years and it just turned 15k.

What I would like to know is the engine compatible with my 07 GT? Better yet engine and 6 speed manual transmission. But I still hate the rear end of the 2010 + Mustangs. :barf fd

412/390?

Wow....

I had a long term plan to eventually drop a 4.6 motor in my '66, but screw that idea! I'm guessing this new 5.0 will be a much easier swap.

Is this new engine going to replace the 4.6 on production GT's? I'm figuring I'll have to wait a good 2-3 years before the hoopla dies down enough for me to score one out of a wrecked GT, but that's okay, I can wait.

I've had problems with:

1. The rear end (had to replace the rear end pumpkin)
2. The clutch (clutch was replaced)
3. The top end of the motor (new lifters, 8 new fuel injectors, driver's side fuel rail)
4. RPM drops below 750 (or whatever idle is set at for manual cars), dealer said that was normal, I fixed it with cleaning out the crud in the throttle body
5. New fuel pump (which was installed improperly and poured gas out of the bottom of the car after the first refill), tow truck ride back to the dealership to have that fixed, again
6. Paint work on the hood twice on the leading lip where the metal frame and aluminum hood don't get along and create a rust like issue
7. Two returns to the same dealership paint shop to have them properly wheel out my hood after their hacks put deep scratches, micro-marred and hazed the clear in several spots
8. Car was delivered with 317 miles on it after I had custom ordered it to my liking (and I shouldn't have taken it but I had already sold my car and needed to get back to Tallahassee for classes that had already started)
9. Passenger side seat seemed lose and would wobble a lot while driving and it turned out to have a defective seat track bolted to it (awesome safety!)
10. Three dash rattles
11. The instrument cluster housing had to be replaced because the "chrome" was starting to lift and peel in two places

That's just off the top of my head. The car has been into the stealership a grand total of 26 times now and it's 3 years old with 44k on it. The car is not raced or abused, washed at least once a week (usually twice), full details by me twice a month, fluids are changed on a set schedule with good stuff (Mobil 1, Royal Purple, etc). Car is always garaged whether at home or on campus.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the concern, that caused you to have all these parts replaced in number 3?

There was a whole lot of lifter noise that you could hear from 3 or 4 feet away with the hood closed and I asked the tech about it to find out if that was normal. He told me there was a TSB out on it and when I looked into it I asked the service guy about it. He said he couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary. The next trip into the dealer a different tech said that he had concerns about the lifters and thought that we should replace them so they ordered them and installed them.

The fuel injectors were going bad randomly. I had 3 go bad on me in about 4 or 5 month period where it was throwing codes and driving like crap. When I brought it in the 3rd time for that same issue they replaced all 8 of them and I guess the tech had some concerns over the fuel rail as well so they replaced it as well. Haven't had a problem with them since.

I was just curious as I'm a Ford technician. I've never heard of a 05 & up Mustang having problems with the injectors or lifters.

^ That's the TSB for it.

Has Ford released any information about what that new 5.0 would run as a crate motor? That would be a seriously awesome resto-rod to build.

I've seen that TSB but I've never ran across a vehicle that needed repaired per it. I guess yours was an exception.

As far as I know no information on the new 5.0 like that has been released as of yet.
