Mark,

Isn't this a re-telling of what happened a couple of years ago? I seem to remember reading this story back when it happened.... it's either that or deja-vu.

Two years ago in Dec 2008 the Engine was just going into the car for the first time in 3 years and it did not have fenders on it until a month ago. I am guessing that this must have happened to someone else and it sounds familiar? Until a few weeks ago I have not driven this car on the road since 2004ish :)

on another note: I just put new tires on the front 215/60/R15 BF's and I have to wait till Thursday for the 255/60/R15's apparently Discount tire has only one pair of this tire this size in America and they are FED Exing for me here. They said the factory does not show this tire in stock either. wtf

And they say New Mexico is not a Third World Country :craz

You should move to the US :)

On a 1/2" stud, shouldn't there be about 1/2" of threads showing once the lugnut has been torqued down?

A good rule of thumb for thread engagement is 1.5 to 2 times thread diameter. for example a 1/2" thread should have 3/4 to 1" engagement.

After the wife showed up with the racing jack, tire block and a new ego I drove it back home and analized what happened.

I see....that is your problem.

You should never, ever "analize" your car. It got back at you.

Heres what happens when the front tire comes off....

Wow . Did that just happen. Thank you for posting it, I know it is hard to post this kind of pick because it usually reflects an impression of a mistake. However this kind of post doea indeed help remind others that checking and double checking the lugs are not a waste of time. Do you care to tell the driving characteristics shortly after ejection...I mean this is on coming traffic pull and surely got you attention real quick.

I think it was 5 or 6 years ago. I had just installed the wheels
and had Sears do an alignment. For some reason they removed
the wheels and when they put them back on never tightened the lug nuts.
I drove home from Sears, about 7 miles, and was less than a half
mile from home when the wheel let go. I was doong about 10mph.
Heard a noise, saw ALL 5 lug nuts fly past the window in the same
circle pattern as they were on the wheel...followed by the rocker panel
molding and the emblems. Front end dropped and I pulled over. Opened the
door and caught the tire as it was rolling by.
She had all the original sheetmetal without any bodywork till that day.
