I registered last week for the MCA show in Ashville only to find out is is sold out and they are not accepting any more registrations. A MCA show sold out? Nothing was listed on their registration form or in their flier that this was a limited space show and they would only accept a limited number of cars (it would have been nice to have known). Oh well, I guess this is the straw that broke the camels back. Anyway, it's adious MCA.

That is an extremely popular show, and location, and it has been sold out for some time now. It's also only about two weeks away. We have to put a limit on the cars for two reasons, first, there is only so much room available, and second, there are only so many judges available. All MCA shows are now preregistration only now to make sure we are not inundated by too many cars, which reduces the experience for all involved. You probably also missed the preregistration deadline.

Ugh.................what deadline? Where's it listed? Also, it would have been nice to know there was only a limited on the number of registrants that would be accepted. Neither was listed in the flier or registration form. You have a national show location that will only handle so many cars and don't list it? I've got a feeling I'm not the only one that will be dumping their MCA membership because of this. For me it's the second and final time I've had trouble with the MCA. There will not be a third.

I looked at the documents and didn't see a deadline, so we may have grandfathered this show and not required it. It all depends on when they signed their contract with us. All MCA Nationals and Grand Nationals are going to have a space limitation, that's a no-brainer. We're not like Knotts or other one-day shows where they can keep stuffing cars in and we simply cannot properly handle 400-500 cars for judging. I would guess that almost every MCA National and Grand National is sold out two weeks to a month ahead of time these days, and some even more. Asheville is a very unique location for a show and if you look on the flyer, they list several areas and show events where the numbers of cars are restricted.

Sounds to me that MCA needs to improve their process of communicating to the possible participants. This is not hard and I don't understand why you're trying to justify sloppy event management, Laurie. Knott's has a way to deal with this. They list the # of vehicles on the for, the deadline and also post on their website when the registration is closed. This is simple and MCA's performance is unacceptable.

Oh, come on now, this is not sloppy event management. First of all, MCA does not run the individual shows, each individual host club does. We provide guidelines, which have been changing every year as we fine tune the details. The registrations are done by each individual club, and two weeks before the event, a list of participants is provided to MCA. Waiting to register for a national show until two weeks before it is held is asking to get shut out. Are you really surprised by that? We've had shows fill up two months before they were held!

To assist with registrations, MCA will be using MotoSho starting next year for all shows. If you have registered for the 50th anniversary, that is the system you used. It will be all online registration that will track the numbers and retain the data.

Yeah your right, it's BS. I didn't know for sure my wife was going to get the time off for sure and that's why I read the flier and registration form very carefully. I seen an update on the flier that all the Bilkmore slots were full and the inside parking at the event was full, but "NOTHING" about the show being sold out. The only thing that is not BS is the fact that I quit the MCA. I will be in touch with the MCA to recover my money for the show and for my membership renewal that I paid a couple months ago. This is not my first rodeo with the MCA but it "will" by my last.

You saw the update that the Biltmore and indoor slots were full? If you saw that, why would you think that registration was still open? If the slots are full, that means no more cars can be accommodated.

:wtf

Yeah, a whopping 20 spots for indoor parking and 150 for the biltmore event which BTW, it was clearly stated that was not a part of the MCA show and there was a limit that could attend. At this point it really doesn't matter, all I want is my money back and my name removed from their membership book. There are far too many great car shows I can use my money for. Oh BTW, it states on your form that "All event registrations MUST be turned in by 3pm on July the 4th". Is this the cut off date that is clearly stated in flier that I missed? NOW :wtf

Can't we all just get a bong....er along?

Naaaa like I said, I had a round with the mca years ago and said I would never fool with them again :wth. Like a dumba$$, I let my friends convince me things have changed and talked me into rejoining. Well guess what, them boys were wrong. :char

No, that's the cutoff date for the various events associated with the show. And, it's not MCA's form, it's the Asheville's club.

Laurie, regardless of the number of excuses and thoughts you provide, MCA is perceived as being mis managed. I see it as such also. MCA providing guidance as you suggest is something that I would have thought would have been provided to clubs YEARS ago and you'd just be fine tuning things from there on out, with the internet helping tremendously.

As a manager, understanding and managing customer and team perceptions is paramount. It does not matter if you have the hottest, bestest thing in the world, if your customer and team members thing its junk, you will fail.

You defend the organization's situation and steps in stead of listening, receiving the FEEDBACK that's being provided and doing something about it..... That's not being a good leader.

THAT"S NOT TRUE :no, this is what's written on the flier......

"If you wish to attend this event, you must preregister and prepay via the national show registration form."

There have been regular updates about the Asheville show and the number of cars registered on the MCA website forums. I'm guessing these updates were not posted to the registration site or Asheville club website? As I understand it, they sold out a few weeks ago.

Standardizing the online registration process is something that needed to be done 10 years ago. Letting clubs use their own registration process is a recipe for disaster and inconsistency. I'm glad that there is direction to use the same web registration for future shows. I'm not sure if some clubs still do it, but it seems like I remember having to print a registration form and mail in a check for a show not too long ago. Although, I have only taken a car to a show 2 times over the past 7 years.

While I can see why someone would be upset about being turned away, I wouldn't cancel my membership over it. All the folks working on the shows are volunteers and the local clubs are usually supporting a charity or special cause with the proceeds. It's a lot of work that goes into events like this.

Charles, I could not agree with you more on the issue of volunteers. That makes the importance of managing this in an effective way much more important. In my experiences with the Boy Scouts of America and the Association of Old Crows, I see this to be true as well....... What I don't get is why people become defensive in a situation such as this. 67 Evil is simply pointing out facts and his frustration on why he was shunned when he had no information on the registration being closed. This also shows that there are 'cliques' of the people in the know and they believe that an outsider 'should know' that this is all happening. I see this as a leadership failure in the MCA in managing and training the clubs who will conduct an MCA sponsored show, and secondly, poor and sloppy communications by the MCA and the clubs....

Totally agree Steve. I have 2 boys in BSA and I am a den leader/merit badge counselor, so familiar with that organization also. They do have a much larger infrastructure along with paid employees at the higher level. Not sure that is a fair comparison, but agree that from a management-perspective, there is always improvement that can be made.

The MCA forums are open to all, so the information about the show was available, but you had to know where to look. I would not attribute the issue at hand to being the results of cliques or people in the know not sharing information. It appears this problem could have been prevented by more close communication between the club registration folks and those managing the website/registration site.

While I do have many years invested in MCA, I have not been involved much over the past couple of years since I quit the NHJ position. I'm pretty much out of the loop and my enthusiasm tarnished due to politics, but do wish the best for the organization. Just posting to help give a different perspective on the matter and give Laurie a little back-up. :)

Not trying to be defensive, just trying to clear up this situation and explain how the MCA shows work. As Charles stated, information on individual shows is available in the Ask MCA section on the Forum page of the MCA website. I believe Asheville did eight updates. However, other than being one of the people who reviewed the show application and presented it to the Board of Directors for final approval, I have had no involvement with it. It's on the other side of the country and I had no intention of attending.

I'm sorry you registered too late to get in, but this isn't the first time something like has happened. The worst that I remember was the Columbus National in 2008 when a guy who lived near the show decided to wait until the week of the show to register and it had closed two months earlier. The show flier clearly stated it was restricted to 300 cars. They could not expand the show area because the landowner wanted $10,000. This guy called up Stan Edington at 6 am California time to rant and rave about it. I'm glad my phone number wasn't posted at the time!

So, fair warning to everyone, starting next year all MCA shows will require that you be a member to attend with a JUDGED car (doesn't apply to display classes), you much be preregistered, there are limits to the cars that can be entered, and all registrations will be done online through Motosho.

So you will have to pay to join the organization and then pay them to judge your car? Is that to reduce the number of entries or increase membership? I suspect it will have a decrease in the number of cars at the show and a reduction in membership. :shrug

No, I registered and done exactly what I was supposed to. Again there was nothing saying to"check the MCA's web page for updates" on the flier nor on the registration form so STOP pointing your finger at me saying it's my fault. Sounds like on the Columbus show registration form they got it right and it was clearly on the form. If the man applied after the listed cut off date it's his fault. Also, I'd like to make one thing clear after all that has been written in this thread so nobody will get confused on the upcoming Mustangs 50th, you do not have to be a mca member to attend the show, and for me, I'll be parking in the non member section.
