This is why boys need strict parenting

Raising two ~ 9 year old boys I can say there is a reason I own a paddle and the boys know I will not hesitate to use it when required.

We got the handy thick belt and I'm not scared to use it either. I also have a bar of soap I will use (and have!) if I hear bad words.

I think that might a problem with kids today. Parent's don't discipline them like our parents did when we were growing up. I'd get my butt whooped if I did something I know I wasn't suppose to do. But that is a WHOLE different topic I could rant about all day long.

I think every now and then when I let out a good burp, I can still taste a little bit of soap....

LOL I still remember one time, I was like 14 or 15 when I was so mad at my mother I called her a bitch. Oh my.... that was a mistake. :hide All I can remember is her saying, "Bitch...who are you calling a bitch?! I brought your ass in this world and I can take it out!" and then everything went fuzzy.... :skul I never dared saying anything bad to my mother after that.

The boys thought they had gotten clever when they were about 5 yo and thought I wouldn't spank them in public one time in the grocery line. They were right I wouldn't spank my kids in public...I left the line and dragged them into the nearest bathroom. They've never cut up in a check out line again.

You're right, people don't discipline their kids and try to be their "friend" or "buddy" and then wonder why they act up. :shrug

At our old house we had one kid who lived two doors down that was lacking discipline at home to the point that no one wanted to deal with him or be around him. I felt sorry for him that his folks didn't care enough about him to teach him how to act.

Spanking and Good Parenting are non-correlative.

There are great parents who do not spank. There are awful parents that do.

No judgment intended at all for those that do spank. Being a parent is hard, and we do what we feel is best for our kids. As long as you're not abusive, then I have no issue with spanking. But I just won't do it. That's all.

Rule number one is never spank them out of anger. Frankly, don't ever let it get far enough that you've "had enough" which might cause you to spank out of anger. Grab the paddle long before you get to the point where you're really pissed due to kiddos not listening.

Guess different things work for other kids but with mine spanking got their attention in a big hurry and time out, etc wasn't going to work for them. We were having some discipline "issues" with them when they hit about 3 1/2. I hardly ever use the paddle simply because they know I have it and I am not afraid to use it. If you use it a couple of times at most that's usually all it takes for a good while till they decide to test the waters again at some point.

I agree with Rusty, you only have to give them a good spanking they remember... then the mere threat of another usually does the trick. I have 3 boys and have spanked them but not in such a long time. I can't remember the last one, but they do! No offence to those who don't spank but a lot of kids I see could really use a good spanking. Many kids have no respect for authority. My wife is a bus driver and has had to get parents involved with some kids that just don't behave, sometimes the parents are worse than the kids.

Ohhh...you're not kidding.

My kids know that if they came home with a bad conduct mark it won't be pretty. They have never come home with a bad conduct mark, go figure.... The boys know their teachers have my e-mail / phone and have been told if they have a problem with their conduct to let me know and it will be taken care of soon as I get home.

I don't get on their case about academic grades as long as I know they are trying their best. Last nine weeks they made all A's but there has been times in the past years when they came home with C's due to dyslexia related issues and I didn't ride their case because I knew they were trying as hard as they can / could.

I wish to correct this point I made...it does not accurately reflect what I meant to say...so this is the follow up point I should have made originally:

"By the same token, there are great parents who DO spank, and awful parents that do not."

IOW, I don't think I'm a better parent than other parents because I don't spank and they do. I believe that *I* am a better parent than *I* would be if I spanked rather than if I don't. I don't claim to be doing it right, or better, or anything else...I claim that what I do works for *ME* because this is how *I* want to do it. That's all. No judgment.

My point is that this is trotted out a lot (no offense intended, Craig)
but a lot of kids I see could really use a good spanking

yes, true. And a lot of kids I've seen get spanked didn't deserve it, but were rather being abused by an out of control parent.

Spanking and good parenting are non-correlative!

My daughter is 14 and is an envy of a lot of parents. She is always welcome anywhere she goes, mostly because she knows how to defer to authority, how to say "Yes Ma'am, no ma'am, no thank you, yes please" and when it is appropriate to be "casual" and when one should be on best behavior. She wasn't born knowing this. I cannot count how many parents have said to me how amazed they are at her behavior. She very VERY rarely gets lippy with me or my wife, and when she does we shut it down fast. She has never been spanked, except as a very small child, when running out into a parking lot. That was before I was a part of her life.

My son is 4. He's strong willed, smart as a whip, and extremely excitable. I wouldn't call him bad, but he has had his behavior issues. But he also looks at adults when they talk to him, and knows to look them in the eyes. He's shy, so he often has to be reminded, but we remind him often. He now knows to be polite, even when he doesn't want to be. When he was younger, people in public who we didn't know would say "Oh aren't you cute!" or "Hello there!" and we wouldn't let him out of the situation until he either replied with "Thank you" or "Hello." We would not let him out of the situation until he responded appropriately. Often the person would say "OH that's OK." and we'd say "No it isn't." Frankly, it wasn't about them it was about him. Unfortunately they were tugged into an awkward situation, but too bad, my kid will not be rude to adults.

Now he knows. He also knows how to say please and thank you, and is learning how to use "Yes Ma'am" and "No Ma'am" over "Uhh huh" and "nuh uhh." But we keep at him.

He's not perfect, but he is, on the whole well behaved, and gets told about it really fast when he's not behaved. I don't let him off the hook. We have high expectations out of both our kids, and they know.

But we don't spank. And, frankly, yes I resent the implication that my kids are bad because of it. Want to judge them outside the context of whether we spank or not, fine. Find them falling short, let me know. But until you know them, don't assume they are ill behaved just because we don't spank.

Like I said, do what works for you, and as long as you aren't abusive, then whatever works for you is fine with me.

I expect the same respect.

I don't recall anyone making the implication.

I believe when people say there are kids out there that could use a good spanking they are referring to parents that allow their kids to run all over them with zero discipline at home. If kids are not taught to respect authority and to behave at home then there is zero chance in hell they will respect authority or behave at school, etc.

Some kids one thing works and it doesn't work for other kids. With my little guys time out was a joke...you literally had to make them stay in the corner via holding them physically in the corner.

I think the big mistake parents with several kids make is assuming if it works for one of their kids (typically the oldest) then it will work for all their kids. Not so....that's how you get people like my aunt and uncle. They had three kids. Two are functional adults but the youngest has been in and out of prison his whole life....all three of my cousins were raised the same. Whatever method they used worked great for two of the three but for the third one...not so much. They failed to realize that any given method might work for one kid but not work for another kid. It's really a trial and error sort of thing.

I do know that in junior high I never got a bad conduct mark in 7th grade because I played football and I knew the coach was going to ask to see everyone's report card. In 7th grade, a swat was the only option and that scared me enough to keep my nose clean. By 8th grade though some folks had complained so we had the option of a swat or running laps, etc. My conduct grades went down considerably in 8th grade because running laps or bear crawling several hundred yards didn't scare me in the least.

Some need it, some don't. My kids knew they would get a spanking from dear old dad whenever they got out of hand. I haven't had to do anything in years because they just knew the threat was there. They also know my wife won't so who do you think they run roughshod over?
We were out a year or two ago when my girls were about 9 and 11. We were in a store and someone's kid was throwing a sh$tfit extreme. My daughters look at me and ask," why aren't they gonna spank him?"
I explained that some parents don't believe in corporal punishment and it's a choice and so forth...

They both look at me in disbelief and say together, " but it works" :shrug

I hope I didn't give the impression all parents should spank their children. If I gave that impression, I apologize. I was merely saying that parents today don't seem to discipline the same as years ago. Whether that be spanking, or grounding, etc. Any form of punishment, physical or not.

Another thing... I don't understand parents who ground their kids and/or send their room where the kid has a tv, dvd player, cell phone, video game console and they don't take them away. :wtf That is like that time when I was in high school, 10th grade I skipped school for a day. I was caught. The school suspended me for 1 day and told me if caught again, the suspension would be 3 days long. Uh hello...I didn't want to go to school in the first place. LOL Win win!! :thu

Spanking is most appropriate between consenting adults. Sometimes even when they don't consent...

A shock collar and a cattle prod have always seemed to work for me. That'll get their attention and FAST!
