Time for a new tv.

Well my 12 year old dinosaur of a tv finally died on Monday. It's been slowly getting worse for the last 3-4 months, but we have been putting off buying a new one. When we turned it on it would take about 30-40 minutes for the picture to come on. The sound stopped working awhile ago too.

We are looking at buying a 47" vizio.
Trying to keep it under $800. Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? I have heard a lot of mixed reviews on them.

We don't have any gaming systems, blueray, hd programming etc. so I just need a basic set. Heck, we still have rabbit ears and a vcr too.

I've always been a big fan of Panasonic plasmas myself but that has become the "old" technology. I've also got a couple Samsungs that have been very good TVs.

I would avoid the Vizio brand myself based on all the reviews and firsthand feedback I have heard. Stay away from the cheaper, lesser known brands. ONe big thing to pay attention to is sound quality. Many of the lower cost flat screens have crap for audio quality. IF you are using a separate audio system than that is not a big deal.

You are a terrible example of consumerism. Have you forgetten you will need a new stand, a new 7.1 surround sound, new speakers, a new sofa to sit on and a whole new room to put it in?

I bought a LG 55" LED LCD a few years back due to high rankings and positive feedback from owners and have been very happy with it. HD and Blu-ray are awesome on it and the sound is very good. :thu

Haha. The new room will come when we move. We were trying to wait to buy a tv until after we move too. But that didn't pan out.

We have always had Sony. But with a 2 year old now I just can't justify spending $1000 + on a new tv. We just want something affordable and decent, but I don't want it to be crap in 2 years.

Here is the old tv.

Hell, if you want another old console I've got a great old Mitsubishi 26" that still works you can have. I thought I was the last person on earth to have such a beast.

I've had good luck with Vizio. I know a lot of people who have bought them also with no problems. You can get the 47" for about $750 if memory serves me correctly.

Heck, make a trip to NC and I'll make you a heckuva deal on a 55" rear projection HD Toshiba. Don't pay extra for LED, it's just an LCD with different lighting.

Actually I was just messing around. That TV still works. It's in the basement. :thu
This is the dead one. It's a 42" sony rear projection.

I think it's a midwest thing. We have to have something to watch in the basement while we are huddling down there waiting out storms.

Whatever way you go. Make sure to get one that has a pretty fast refresh rate. You want to be able to see all of natures glory in the best possible way!

You piece of internet ----.

Probably the raleigh/durham area and greensboro.
We are looking at that area to move and may head down to Charleston, SC too.

Great time to buy one. Go for an LED tv with wifi and wireless HDMI if you can get it.

Vizio is good. A US company so the profits stay here unlike the others (even tho the set is assembled in Taiwan or China).

LED TV will also use only 100 watts or so vice 40-0 to500 wats for a similar Plasma or projection set (LCD is in between near LED).

Costco has excellent choices and a great warranty - they also have some screaming deals in their monthly coupon flier.

I'm about 1.5 hours from G'boro. Let me know your schedule closer to time.

I will let you know.

This is one the models we are looking at.
Target has it for $629 plus we can get 5% off with our red card which pays for the tax.

Walmart has this one for $748. It has the wifi and 3d which i don't really care about.

I would like to get the wifi but not sure I would use it.

And sadly we do not have a costco by us.
