Time for a new tv.

Time for a new tv.

If you get an lcd set, make sure you can see it from a low angle, like a kid on the floor. I bought one and got it home, only to find that my daughter could not see the picture from the floor.

+1 on Panasonic. They manufacture most if not all of their own components. This gives them better quality control of the product they sell. :thu

Time for a new tv.

I bought a Toshiba 46" LCD full HD last year for a little over $700. I love it. I spent a few hundred more and got a Panasonic Blu-ray player and surround at the same time. Just do your research and look at reviews everywhere.

I would go for a LED TV , IMO great picture in any room regardless daylight interference and have a low current consume !! ( think how many hours this thing will be on )
Just check sound quality because most TV have poor sound when turning up the volume.
(if you don't have a cinema-soundsystem in house )
IMHO

I have a 7 year old Vizio 50" Plasma. Been a great TV and I see no reason to upgrade. Whenever I do, it will be another Vizio.

All you Vizio fans have me confused. Anytime I have ever looked at one next to another screen all I have seen are flaws. Maybe that is the difference. With nothing side-by-side to compare I'd bet most TVs do look pretty good. I'll have to head over to Best Buy or someplace and have another look.

Re: Time for a new tv.

Well, I spent 4 hours running around town looking at tvs last night with a crabby 2 yr old. All I can say is there are a lot of different models out there. In the end we decided since we have so many other things going on now we just couldn't justify $1000. Something about finishing the mustang and the power tour. I don't know.

So we ended up with a 47" vizio. The model is e472vl. It is 1080p, 120 Hz and has the WiFi built in .
Seemed to have a good picture in the store and since we don't have hd programs or blueray anyway, they all are going to look crappy at home. I don't need mickey mouse and Jake and the neverland pirates in hd anyway.

My MIL works for Walmart so we got it for $583+ tax. For that price if we don't like it we can move it in the playroom and get something better later.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.
I will get it hooked up tonight and let you know what I think.

Why not pick up a Blu-ray player while you are at it ? Hell they are under $100.00 some places and the picture is incredible. That way you can get the good out of your new screen some of the time. :shrug
P.S. "The Great Migration" or something like that is a killer dvd to show the great picture on your new addtion. All shot in HD (bears, birds and sh*t like that)

I'm no electronics geek, I just know my TV has been reliable and to me has a good picture but then again I'm not that picky. I bought the TV when it was 3 years old from a friend who had it in his bar that he closed down. TV was on for a lot of hours in the bar during the first 3 years. My parents have some smaller LCDs that suck. Can not see the picture unless straight on with the TV.

Good choice - can't beat it for the money!
+1 on the Blueray suggestion. Really is a difference...

Probably has more to do with WHICH Vizio model you're comparing and who has messed with the floor models - what "adjustments" have they made to the picture? :shrug One of the 1st things I do is to find "Restore Factory Defaults" on most electronic shopping. You'd be amazed what people do........
I went to Nebraska Furniture Mart - they have ~100 different 35"+ TVs on display. The Vizio was not on my short list when I started. Once I got to see all the various brands and models side-by-side, I couldn't find anything within $500 of the price that even compared. Now, I did buy the higher-end model, but even the price-point models were capable of pretty good pictures too.

Re: Time for a new tv.

I'm sure we will eventually get a blue ray. But our current dvd player is an all in one home theater combo that we have also had for at least 12 years. It works fine and we rarely watch dvds anymore, unless its barney or something. I don't want to have to go out and buy all my crappy 80s movies on blueray. Ferris bueller in hd. I don't think so.

We may do netflix though. And I am going to check into upgrading our dish box to hd. It's so old we can't even get remotes for it anymore.

+1 Just walking in and comparing gets you nowhere. You can see the same tv at two different locations and they have two different pictures. It's nothing for someone to want to make one look better over the other if there is more money to be made.

Blueray will play all your old DVD and in most cases upsample them so they look better.
If you wait too long....we weill be onto the new medium of pure digital delivery only and never being able to actually own a video and having to pay for each time you view it ;)

Nope. Digital purchase and download for storage. Right now you can buy on Amazon and it is stored by them in your "library". I'm sure you will continue to see one time view options but you will always be able to own as well.
I'm one of those who likes to own movies. When finishing my basement I built a custom closet under the stairs to house my equipment and movies. I typically buy the day they release and get a few bucks off rather than rent. We go back and watch most movies enough to justify it in my mind. I mean lots of the best comedies are funnier the second and third time watched anyway. Anchorman is a good example.
