I'd like to get the boys a Boxer because I think they are great dogs for kids but not sure they are good enough watch dogs.
I have two boxers and can tell you without a doubt they are good watch dogs. They scare the hell out of anyone who makes the mistake of coming to my door unannounced. The big guy is pushing 90 lbs (he has a bit of fat on him now but he is 9 and not quite as athletic anymore). The female is younger (65 lbs) and a typical boxer...meaning full time play mode. They are absolutely great dogs and awesome with kids. They could also pretty much eat any bad guy that came around or tried to hurt anyone.

Good to know. Both cats and the rat dog are all about 15 years old so I figure their days are numbered...not that I am hoping the rat dog drops dead or anything :roll

Get a boxer and feed the rat dog to it. Just saying.

Actually, they are also very good with other pets. We have a free flying bird they have never bothered and whe nmy daughter was here, they (mostly the female) loved playing with her ferret.

I've told the boys they are waiting till something dies off to get another pet.

My vet bill and pet food bills are bad enough already. The food I can live with, the vet likes to :shee every time you step foot in that place.

Our neighbor has a boxer male, Rocky. Your description of a Boxer sounds exactly like mu Germans...

Great Danes.

The best of all worlds except longevity. They're huge, fearless, intimidating, and love kids. If we weren't raising service dogs, we'd probably have Danes again.

I would have to vote for the Boxers, a cop friend of mine had to run in the house one night from the garage to potty and forgot about Max, he said that was the most scared he had ever been from a dog---boxers are great with kids also--most boxers would have to be killed to get by them --I have never worried about boxers around kids.
