Back in the OLD days in Illinois. Before all these new fangled computer things, when you got a ticket they would confiscate your license and you would 'drive' on the ticket. After the infraction was dealt with, fine, etc....you would get your license back in the mail stapled to paperwork. From then on a cop would ask you for your license and feel how many staple holes were in it for a quick acessment.

You have me curious as to whether Il. still does that. The reason for the curiosity is I investigated a collision last month where a young lady from Il was at fault. She couldn't provide a driver's license, only an ID card. She used the reason you gave. When I ran her through records, Il DMV showed no record. No, she didn't drive herself away from the collision (someone else did, but it wasn't the po-po). Yes, she got an additional invite to a city party for not having a d/l (of course, she got one for causing the collision too)!
Based upon firsthand and anecdotal experience I will say not any longer. At least up in the northern half.

Interesting! When she showed up in court she still hadn't gotten it straightened out so the judge gave her a continuance (another court date). I do believe today's that day!!! This afternoon should be quit interesting...hehehe.

A driver can/does still post his or her license as bond. We no longer staple the license to the ticket to prevent losing it in the paperwork shuffle. Now we use little plastic bags to hold the license and staple that instead.

Mark,

What is the law/rule on this in IL? Been a while since I got a ticket in IL but the boy has had his share and they never took his.

Many smaller departments issue bond books to their Officers directly or their field Sgt will have a book. The person can then sign for the tickets an can be issued a recognizance bond. In Chicago our bond books are all at the district stations.

I guess I need to show my middle daughter this thread since she just moved to Chicago.

IL is so weird!

Maybe I should start a Chicago thread in order to really scare the crap out of me and leave me full of worry, more than I already have.

Craig, now you are Edumacated about how to drive! Hehehehe...I have had to seriously change how I drive due to a GPS being put in my work truck. They monitor everything including hard braking and taking turns too fast and of course speed! It kills me to drive 25 mph for 5 miles!!!!

Good thing the new work truck has cruise control!

Craig, be sure to check with your insurance (don't mention the ticket) as many give a discount for taking a driving/safety course. My oldest brother got a speeding ticket a few years ago, took the driving course to avoid the points ($100) and they submitted his cert., his insurance gave him a $200 discount on his insurance! He came out learning that crime does pay!

cool thanks! yeah, I opted to take it so it wouldn't go on my record. I didn't want my insurance to go up. I haven't had a ticket since I was a teenager...

WOW. That's pretty amazing. I tend to get one a year. It's always in some other state. Usually because a call ran long and I am "racing" to make the last flight out that night.

I've probably deserved more tickets but I do generally try to behave. I'm just lucky I guess because I do push my luck once in a while.
