Went to the Left Coast! Great Trip!

Well, I'll be venturing to the left side for the first time in my life this summer. The wife and I are headed west for our 10th Anniversary in June. We'll fly into Vegas for a day or so, hit the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. Pick up a rental and head to Yosemite for some hiking. Then drive to Monterey before driving the coast to San Francisco for the final couple days. Any Fixers along the way that want to meet up or have suggestion for sight seeing/activities?

Re: Headed to the left coast!

Welcome.

If you have time, while in Monterey, go to the Camel Mission Basilica

It is the Mission where Padre Junipero Serra is buried, right next to the alter!

San Francisco: I suggest the Alcatraz tour. Be sure to book your tickets early. If you like beer, tour the Anchor Brewing Co/Tasting Room. You'll learn some great SF history.

Re: Headed to the left coast!

Don't forget the Valley of Fire North of Vegas, and red Canyon west of Vegas. They rent exotics for a turn filled drive in the canyon.

Tons of places in Cali to, but the guys that live there will get that covered. I have toured all over the west. I am 2 hours north of Vegas near Zion National Park, so if you get up here let me know, I smoke some Dino ribs Fred Flintstone would be proud of.

Re: Headed to the left coast!

Do you have specific dates for your drive from Monterey to SF?

I'm sure we can rouse a few SFers to drive over to the coast.

I'm pretty sure we'll leave Monterey on June 23rd for the drive to SF. A cruise would be awesome. We have already booked a Mustang Convertible for our travels.

Re: Headed to the left coast!

Are you guys thinking about getting together on the 23rd (Monday) or sometime during the weekend of the 21st-22nd?

As An FYI for Brian, us South Bay dwellers are about 90 minutes to Monterey via freeway, longer if we take the scenic back roads. Also note we usually don't need much of an excuse to hit the road and the Monterey peninsula is practically in our backyard.

Re: Headed to the left coast!

Nice drive around the Bay driving up Hwy 1 from Monterey to Santa Cruz...
I would def be up for a get together/ cruise...

Re: Headed to the left coast!

Brian,

If you are definately driving on that Monday the 23rd I'll take the day off and drive to Monterey and cruise with you north.

If you do it Sunday I'm sure more SFers will join in.

Re: Headed to the left coast!

I'm pretty certain its Monday, but I'll check with the Boss because she is making the schedule. I'll get back to you guys.

Or be ready to pay the scalpers. :guns

Tourists think they can just show up and buy tickets for that day. Scalpers figured this out and they buy up all the tickets for weeks ahead of time and sell them to the tourists.

Yup, me too. Hmmmm, lunch at Duartes or ??

Re: Headed to the left coast!

OK, we are booking stuff left and right. Here are the confirmed plans. We will be driving into Carmel on the afternoon of the 22nd (Sunday). We will stay there the night and then drive north to SF on Monday the 23rd. We want to pop over to Pebble Beach before we head north. Where would you guys want to meet? Are you talking about driving all the way down or meeting up part of the way? Lunch at Duartes is fine with us. We have no knowledge of any of those things, but (as much as it pains me to say this) I trust you Craig. :hide

Re: Headed to the left coast!

Alright, the wife and I are about a week out from flying west. Mike (KBMWRS) emailed me and reminded me that those that were planning to cruise from Carmel to SF with us might need a reminder in case they were going to take the day off. So here are our trip plans:

18th Arrive in Las Vegas
19th Vegas
20th Drive from Vegas to Death Valley and then on to Yosemite
21st Hike Yosemite then drive to somewhere between Yosemite to Carmel. (Depending on when we finish the hike, we may drive all the way to Carmel)
22nd Hang out in Carmel
23rd Drive from Carmel to San Francisco
24-25 Hang out in SF (Alcatraz, normal tourist stuff, Giants game). Red-eye home the night of the 25th.

So I was assuming we'd meet the morning of the 23rd, take our time cruising up to SF stopping along the way. We're open to all suggestions. Duartes was mention for lunch by Craig earlier. We checked out the menu and that's cool with us.

So how about it?

On the drive from Carmel to the City, (never Frisco), I would suggest taking Hiway 1 the whole way, and plan for a stop in Santa Cruz, great world class surfing, and other scenic sites to see there...
I would be game to meet up with you guys in Carmel to Santa Cruz if that ultimately is your plan...

Re: Headed to the left coast! (1 Week Out)

OK Monday we meet up....but where? Carmel....a little too tight for our cars and tourists.

Somewhere obvious along Hwy 1 north of Monterey?

Brian.....what time in the morning? Are you planning on doing something in Carmel first?
Depending on our meeting location..I'd say 10am.

Re: Headed to the left coast! (1 Week Out)

I looked at Google maps.
Trying not to get too confusing by meeting in a congested area (Carmel/Monterey) may I suggest a spot on Hwy 1....At the intersections of Hwy 1 & Pieri Ct & South end of Moss Landing Road (south end of Moss Landing area).

At that convergence there is a spot where we could easily park the cars and be seen from Hwy 1, so Brian will spot us.

Then we can continue on north to Duartes or even Phil's down the street.

Re: Headed to the left coast! (1 Week Out)

Mike, the google street view of your suggested meeting spot confirms that there is little to no shoulder for us to park on the east (Northbound) side of Hwy 1. I suggest a little farther north to Dolan Road at the power plant were we can pull off of Hwy 1 A little easier for the caravan to get back onto Northbound Hwy 1.

Re: Headed to the left coast! (1 Week Out)

Alright guys. As far as meeting time, 10-10:30 would be fine. We're going to be doing and seeing everything in Carmel the day before. As far as a meeting point, I'll leave that to you guys since you are more familiar with the area.

What is the drive plan? I'm assuming up Hwy 1? We want to soak in the views as much as possible. Looking forward to it. MDBoss69, we'd be glad to have you join us for as much of the cruise as you can.

Brian
