But there IS a triangle of open area at the intersection which can be easily spotted from approaching northbound (Havok1) direction.

Or then there is the Army Surplus store parking lot (west side) just a little further north of there. Plenty of room, off the road and anyone can spot that store and lot.

Brian did you pre-book tickets for Alcatraz? I would strongly suggest you do that if you haven't. The wife went while she was out there on a business trip, last year IIRC. She said there were people who just showed up and couldn't go because the tour was full. She said she had a super time.

She really went to see the light house, but when she got there and asked the NPS guide she was told it was closed to the public. They explained the Coast Guard controls the light, but when she told them I had spent 15 years in the CG and seing the light house was the main purpose for her visit, they took pity on her (I would more accurately guess she probably cried and whined about it! LOL). The guide made a call and she was lucky enough to get in touch with someone who had keys. They took her on a personal tour of the light and even volunteered to take her picture when they got to the top of the light. That made her trip and it's all she could talk about!

Yep, we booked them as soon as they became available John! I told the wife that I couldn't go all that way and not go. I'll have her bring the waterworks in case the light house is closed. Maybe the Gold Card will help too.

At this point, assuming the plan is to drive up Hwy 1, I might just meet you guys at say the Pescadero Beach state beach for a photo op? Then continue on up Hwy 1.

Mike:

My point is that the crossing from the west side of Hwy 1 across the southbound lane of traffic to go north can be a bit treacherous at times, especially when attempting to travel in a caravan and sticking together.

OK Brian...here's the scoop.

Jeff and I will meet you at the Moss Landing power plant approximately 19 miles north of Monterey on Hwy 1. Just make sure you stay on Hwy 1 (there's a cut off for Hwy 156 (on the way) to the right that you do NOT want to take).
I'd say meet at 10am...if not early if you want. Let us know.

We will be parked on the right shoulder by the power plant at gate 3. Its a part of the road that has trees along it so its in the shadows slightly so keep an eye out for us.

Quite a ways up the coast we will meet Craig.

Do you have any sights that you wanted to see along the way?
If you wanted to make it to SF I'd just suggest the Chevy Chase Vacation tour and just stop along the way in the car for a quick view. We'll get out and be along the beach when we reach Craig...which is our usual photo op spot.

Brian, If the weather is nice in SF, you guys should consider walking across the Golden Gate bridge to the vista point on the north side of the bridge. Quite the view.

Hey guys. Sorry for the delayed response. I've been camping with my son off the grid for the most part for the last couple of days. MD69Boss, sorry you aren't going to make it, but I completely understand.

Mike, that location sounds great. I've scoped it out using Google Street View and that looks like a great place. 10 am is fine with us. The meeting point is about 30 min north of where we are staying, so that'll give us a chance to get up, pack up, and grab something to eat. We don't really have any sights in mind other that just driving up the coast. Its our first time, so nothing to go off of. If we see some place that looks cool, we may just stop for a minute if that's cool with you guys. The beach where we meeting Craig for the pic sounds cool.

Craig, the Golden Gate is on our list to see, but I hadn't thought about walking it. That sounds interesting. I'll mention it to the wife.

Looking forward to it guys. We fly out in the a.m. to start the trip! :yah
