What am I missing (Removing Steering column)

I haven't messed with 65/66 Stangs much but what is so different in the dash? They are both sheetmetal... Is there some bracing in the later cars that the early ones don't have?

I would ask her if she can email you schematics of the iternals of their column to see what parts will break allowing the column not to push up into your chest/jaw as one '65-'66 crash I saw pics of (column was pointing at the roof above the drivers head and driver sustained multiple injuries to chest, neck and jaw but survived).

This statement wouldn't be sufficient for me "she also pointed out that internally there are multiple parts to the column that will break in an accident" that's like my friends saying, 'don't worry, if you fall we'll catch you" I'd like more reassurance than just a rep. for the co. telling me on the phone that they're safe. Granted the Ididit has a coupler at the gearbox connection but I think it's a solid flex joint? in the instance of an accident it would only need to line up directly and bind to pass all the energy up the shaft seems to me?

The design of the '68> collapseable is a smaller lower D shaft and a hollow upper D shaft with a couple of plastic 'plugs' going through both, it wouldn't take much force to snap the plastic plugs allowing the D shafts to slide within each other easily shortening the length of the column by 1/2 it's original length and it's very easy to understand how it works. Wish I would have taken pics of it when I rebuilt it and had the center shaft out.

Yeah I'm still considering either looking for a 68 column, or buying the collapsing 68 column from Ididit (I mean, tilt WOULD be nice)

What she said never really clicked with me. She said the 68-up has additional bracing behind the sheetmetal. I don't have anything to look at but a 66, so I have no clue.

I don't see how a collapsing column could be MORE dangerous than non-collapsing.

Maybe she meant if the column collapsed then your face would hit the dash but really, how much worse could you get? :ep

I guess they may not want to release the internal design of their column but I'd be more comfortable buying from them if they at least posted individual snapshots of the parts she claims would break in an accident. Her statement almost sounds like they would break from the impact but not by design?

Click on Gallery and then Recent. You'll find 9 steering column pics I just loaded

Steve,
I can probably find you a 68 column if you want one.

I have Shag's original out in my shop but I believe some parts are missing, so it would be best if I got you a complete one. Monday, I'll make a couple calls and get back with you.

Craig, I'm fighting with my original one too trying to piece together a complete column. The plastic tit in the middle of the shaft broke so the shaft collapses freely with no resistance. Also I'm missing that black rubber boot you have pictured that goes at the bottom of the column.

Perhaps it would be best for me to get a complete column to start over with too. If you can find a complete one for me, I'll take one too.

Regarding the end of tube plastic collar as seen in pics 68ColumnF nad 68columnG, this item is no longer made. I got the black rubber one from that guy who sells a bunch of NOS parts (what's his name?). I believe this black one is a lower steering tube collar for a 70+ mustang. It was too big in diameter so I had to slit it lengthwise and then remove maybe 3/16" of it, regluing the ends back together and shoved it back into the tube. It's not going anywhere.

Sam, I'm sure finding another 68 column will not be an issue. Stay tuned. Is it just the shaft you need or would another complete column be preferred?

I think it would probably be best just to start over with a complete column. The white plastic piece at the bottom has also seen better days. With issues with the flexible portion of the outer column tube as well, I don't want to have to deal with piecemeal parts. If you find a decent complete column, I'll take the whole thing. Not sure what they go for out there, but I'd expect $100-125 range for a complete unit (minus the steering wheel).

$130 seems like a pretty good price. That black piece I was referring to earlier came from JD Larson. I have sent him an email asking if he has more. It might be a 73 steering column bushing.

Yeah, and if the turn signal switch actually is good, I send back the one I got from NPD for $125.

$125? Wow!!

I'll price them separately from my local mustang salvage yards just for a comparison.

LOCAL mustang salvage YARDS? Yards with an S?

Oooh you lucky California boys. :fbomb

Sorry for the hijack here.

Craig, I went ahead and grabbed that column. Made an offer for $100, he countered with $112.50 and I took it. Depending on how this shows up, I'll get back to you if I need anything else with it.

See Sam? You should have waited. I have access to a few of them for less than $100.00 Tsk! Tsk!

What did I miss? $112 isn't bad and its already pulled, no work for you to do yanking it and boxing it for me. I'll save the favor I ask of you for something better than that. ;)
