Which GPS?

My wife just added a GPS to her xmas list. I use Garmin and have always been pretty happy with that brand. Any reason to consider another brand for her? How do Tomtom compare to Garmin?

My wife and daughter (I use them too) both like the Garmin 750/760 models they use. I have no complaints with years of service with them. In fact, they replaced a 2 year old unit free after I told them I screwed it up. Check Best Buy. I just got a Garmin 765 for $219, $230 off the original price. My sister used Tom Tom and then a Garmin and then bought the Garmin.

I used to get "I'm lost" calls everytime Deb left the house. I bought her a Garmin 2 years ago and have only had one call since (lost signal in BF nowhere). It works great!

I like having the option to have Mr.T give the directions, it's a crackup when you don't follow them.

It seems to be a matter of can't follow them for you......"Pass that PT fool" as Mr.T would say. :lol :lol :lol

If I had that in the 66 Pete, I'd wreck from laughing so hard :lol :lol

Another vote for Garmin. It's the only one that will get you directly to my house I'm assuming b/c of their different mapping software. All others take you way out of the way...which can be a good thing. FTR, there is no substitute for a good atlas.

I must add this.....

In the RV park on the Air Force Base, they require us to move every two months during the heavy season so everyone has access to a full service site. We did this move on Tue. We are currently 3 spaces from where we were from Oct-Dec, but the same space we were in from last Mar-Oct.

Now the comedy....the wife has passed our RV three times today, heading for the "old" site. I guess I need to put the GPS on the trike too. We do have a good laugh about it.....

That is what I hear when I miss a turn or know a better way than the Garmin. :vic You have to be smarter than the GPS. I got my Nuvi 650 2 Christmas ago. This January (2009) I did the update maps thing with my Garmin. It was something like 100 bucks. It recognized some new roads, but not the brand newly opened off-ramps on my freeway. Will I up date it again, probably not. When I was working I used it every day and kept it plugged in all of the time. That killed the battery. I replaced the battery, and it will hold a charge now but the speakers are going. It sounds funny like too much treble. fd

Nope, that is why I use my daughters address. Plus, they do not deliver to the spacers, just to the front office and it is sorted by last name there.

I'm interested in a GPS unit as well. I've been to the TomTom and Garmin websites to find out if their systems provide any of the following Places of Interest without success:

While traveling on the Interstate Highway system, does it show whether the upcoming interchange has gas stations? And are the rest stops/welcome areas included in the maps?

Yes...yes...when one has to pee, it'd be nice to know how long I have to wait.

Seriously, I am interested in these features and neither website had any information at all. Therefore, I need to ask y'all what your experience is.

On my Garmin, I can ask for closest services for the gas and I believe it also give rest stop info. I kind of ignore that part when traveling with the RV. You can also search for gas by brand name stations.

Just checked on my Garmin...closest rest stop is 45 miles north in Chipley, and it listed them for the next 150 miles.
