Why do people drive with just their parking lights on?

I don't know about driving in the daytime with them on but I have done this in the early evening before it gets dark. It was quite common in Northern Illinois. I don't really have a good reason but it was common practice when I was younger. I think most GM cars and lot of other have daytime running lights of some kind and even auto "on" so it's not as common anymore. When I used to cruise a lot, it was kinda cool-looking as the sun began to set, to see a bunch of hot rods or whatever cruising the strip with the "cool lights" we used to call it. I guess maybe it was stupid but the nerds and grandma didn't do it so it would kind of separate you if were cruising to get attention. Now everybody that wants attention just cranks the loud bass that rattles your teeth, I like the lights better...

Now I am too old to care and probably don't want or need the attention. Of course cruising around in the Mustang while everyone else is in a boring Toyota or Honda I get attention whether my lights are on or not!

I only ever ran with them on in the gloaming as well, for added visibility/safety before it got dark enough to need the headlights. Mostly when I see it done in full daylight, it's an elderly person going about 10mph under the posted speed limit :)
