Would it be wrong?

Dave,

I've had a skunk around the house for a while. She didn't bother me because she's usually only out at night. Figured if she left me alone I'd leave her alone.

Then said skunk had babies and the property was being over run with the stinky little things and the little ones come out at all times of the day.

So...I called the exterminator. He wanted a small fortune to catch them which led me to purchasing a skunk trap and catching them myself.

Here the deal though. I can always use parts money and have been kicking around a scheme.

The scheme goes something like releasing several of the skunks into someone's yard, waiting a day or two then leaving a flyer for skunk removal services on their front door.

Would this be a totally bad idea?

Why...oh...why, would you want to catch a skunk more than once?? The better plan, or should I say blackmail scheme, would be to catch the skunk and then go to someone's house with the skunk in the cage. Tell them to pay you money or you'll release the skunk in their yard.

The only down side is that you'll probably smell like a skunk 24/7.

You think you are the first on this....the exterminator and the trap salesman are one step ahead of you.

I want a baby skunk!!! I want to get it de-scented and have it as a pet so I can mess with my mother in law. :vic

I've got to be 100% honest with you... When I read this:

Dave,

.... I was under the impression you were talking about your wife and this was going to be the lead in to a joke. Sorry, my bad.

Back on point.

I dunno, really? Are people in your area that dumb/lazy? Aren't you in Texas? Doesn't the typical homeowner have a small arsenal of firearms that they'd use to blast the little buggers? I know that people around here do and wouldn't think twice about blasting away into the front/rear lawn. You'd have printed all of those flyers for nothing if the entire litter got blasted.... and skunks don't run very fast... especially baby ones. Personally I'd take a pass on this idea.

I worked at an exterminating company in highschool. You should follow Dave's advice in all matters, but if you decide against any kind of catch and release, those live traps will slide right down into a trash can 3/4 full of water. No more skunk spray. Ask me how I know.

It would be a better threat to have a de-scented skunk and then release it in the poor slob's backyard, then ask for an exorbitant amount of money to catch it.

Since last Friday I've caught the mother skunk, three little skunks and two possums for good measure.

To date, I've released them all out in the woods where they can do whatever they want without bothering people.

But if the plan were a go, I bet I could find another skunk, LOL!

Seriously though...the exterminator wanted $75 just to set the trap then $75 per animal caught. If I did the math correctly, I've hauled off over $500 worth of animals for the $60 cost of the one skunk trap like this one...

Lots of guns in this area but it's in a subdivision. I would have shot them but I figured after a round or two I'd have been speaking with the local sheriff deputy.

When living in Az., we also had a small temp problem. Caught and released many. My Dad started painting them with yellow paint and we found that they had to be at least 10 miles away before they would not come back. At one time, we caught the same one 4 times in 10 days and each time it was dropped 4+ miles from the house. Good luck.

.22 CB's, a cap gun is louder. Just make sure it's a GOOD shot and you're far away.

Damn - in Texas? WTF?

Here in NC, the neighbors would be happy to be rid of the little stinkers. When I went for a pistol permit, deputy encouraged me to get more than one permit -"you never know when you'll want to pick up another pistol". Of course, I don't live in the Great State of Mecklenburg (ie, Charlotte), where the GFW (gun fearing wussy) part of NC resides.

Here in Texas the permit to carry is issued to the individual...if you are carrying one or ten doesn't matter as long as they are concealed. My step dad is taking the class to get his license this Saturday, actually...I loaned him my 40 cal yesterday because his 9 mm had a malfunction so he has to send it back to the manufacturer but he wanted to use a semi-auto for the test. If you qualify with a revolver then that is all you can carry...if you qualify with semi-auto then you can carry either. I don't mind it for a few days, my snub nosed .357 is a lot easier to conceal and probably more reliable anyway.

The class has been on my to do list but I haven't had a Saturday where I could spend from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the class. I am going to find out if they give it on weekdays and take a day off here soon. I have several vacation days I need to use between now and year end anyway.

On the plus, in Texas if you are "traveling" (defined now days as pretty much leaving your driveway) then you can conceal one in your vehicle.

.... but firing it at a rodent is frowned upon?

Any time after midnight I probably could cap one of the little devils with a .22 then quickly step inside or even just shoot it from the window. Most of my neighbors wouldn't care even if they figured it out but there's always that one neighbor....I think most neighborhoods have one.

Once you figure out who this neighbor is you can kill two birds with one stone. Place a dozen eggs by his back deck and drop any future rodents off at his place.

What? Why would he get close enough to paint 'em? I'm still wondering why they would be trapped and then someone would want to go get the trap. Shoot the bastid with a .22. One shot and nobody knows the difference. You could of course do like dad did when he trapped the coon a couple years ago. He went out to get the trap and was gonna haul it down the road and let it go. When he went to pick up the trap the coon hissed and jumped at him. So as to not put a mental stress on said coon he left it in the trap...through the hot summer days....till it died. Then he hauled it off without causing any mental anguish.

First of all, you shoot a skunk close by your property and there is a good chance you will smell it for a long time. They also have a natural stink that is not from their spray. Even removing the spray parts, they will still have a slight odor.

A skunk cannot spray you if it cannot get its tail stood up. Understand your enemy. We used short/small traps and it worked every time. We could walk right up to the trap and shoot them with a paint can. After a while, each got a different color.

Living out in the desert like we did, it was no problem sharing the space. Most wildlife moved out after we moved in. Just a few stubborn ones over the years. Skunks will move in while you are gone for a weekend.

We would trap them, drag the trap into a small trailer, paint them, and go for a ride. The final way to keep them from returning was to take them across the river that was 9 miles from out house. Never saw one return then.

I understand that. I just know I'd be the lucky one to get the Houdini skunk. I don't have a good history with varmints.

Dang...I live in the PRK and I constantly shoot ground squirrels in the back yard. You know you're a redneck when you crack the sliding glass door open just far enough to stick the barrel out to shoot varmits. :lol
