70 Mach 1- How wide can you go?

I ran across this picture of Grabber70's rear tires.

Taking a ruler to my computer screen, his outer tire edge would be flush with the quarter panel above the wheel lip. I don't think it would tuck into the wheel houses, which with his stance as it is the max suspension travel may not go too much into the wheelhouses.

The wheelrite tool arrives in the mail today and hope to get some measurements this weekend. I'll let you know what I find out.

Grabber70, have you measured your wheel width to see if it is really 11.5"? Keep in mind the rim width actually measures an inch wider than the section width due to the bead. I just want to make sure you didn't measure 10.5" and then state that you are using 10.5" rims. I assume you already know about the inch difference but thought I'd at least point that out.

Hope this is what you were looking for, I will try and get the other measurement for you soon.

I am amazed at the fixation with large tires and wide rims and all. The Challenger looks killer and the wheel config on the Mach I in my opinion are certainly as large as you wanna go. Otherwise buy a new 2010 Stang and get 22's if you want.... On the older rides IO still think 17" is a large a wheel you wanna go..............

Maybe this desire to stuff openings with large objects is the result of too many Viagra ads, penis enlargement ads, etc... etc...

:eek

Yes, agreed. I think those wheels and rubber band tires are too tall on the 69. I can only imagine it rides like its on bare rims!

The fat tire thing, well....I think it could be tied to mans fascination for large spherical objects.....pairs of large spherical objects especially when placed in close proximity to one another.

Here is another nice lowered and fat machine for those that are mesmerized by the look

As far as "why" go with larger rims: There are two common things that kill old muscle cars. Lack of stopping power on modern roads and traffic patterns resulting in crashes, and poor reuse of old electrical components resulting in fires.
I'll be using a very new electrical system, and the car has a fully updated 2004 brake system. As a result of the larger brakes, I can not use the factory 15" wheels. I MUST upgrade to a 17 inch wheel to let the brakes clear. That is why.

Now, I'm still at work in Europe (been away a year and I have 4 months to go) and my car is in Canada. The shop wanted to put tires on the car so they could move it, so I moved up my purchase. I'll tell ya, doing anything with this car while I'm so far away is costly and a total PITA. I now have a few photos so you can see a (another) '69 Mustang mach I with 17x9 on the front, and 17x10.5 on the rear.

As long as there's no desire to keep the tires/wheels within the wheelwells.... you can go pretty wide.... just as you've pictured. Neither your front nor your rear tires will fit into your wheelwells. Lowering the vehicle is out of the question with those wheels... you'll actually have to "raise" the body to prevent tire/body panel damage.

Can you have your shop take some pics with a straight edge on the tires up to the wheel lip, similar to what they did to the rear rims further up in this thread? I'm curious where your front and rear tires end up in relation to the fender/quarter lips. Thanks!

I finally bit the bullet and ordered a set of 17x8/10.5 anthracite bullitt rims last friday. The 17x8 are on backorder for a week or two. I'll start a new thread when I go to install them.

I went with the ones without rivets to be on the safe side. I tried finding pictures of the ones with rivets on our cars but it all seems to be late model, like what was discussed in the other thread.

I will be glad when I get the rear end completed and back under the car so I can test my 315's under it. I will be dropping the car and may have to trim the inner fender lip to get the height I want. I want something like Rick Flores runs on his red car.

Same setup as Grabber. 17x8 245/45 fronts and 17x10.5 315/35 rears. Here is a pic of the 245 next to the 315

and here what they replaced, 14" Cragar rims with 205/14 tires.

The extra 3" rim diameter is pretty pronounced next to each other.

And here is the puny 205 tires next to the 315 that will be going in its place

Haven't had a chance to install them. My brake calipers and spindles were a mess thanks to a leaky brake hose awhile back. Figured I'd better take them all off and give them a fresh coat of paint. Probably mid this week before I get them installed. I'll start a new thread when its all done

Wow! Gotto love em! Sumitomo's, best bang for the buck out there when you are gonna run fattys larger than 295's. Same thing I have on the Cuda. Are those 17's going to be close on your upper control arms?

I think this pic says it all.

I was actually trying to see what else was out there besides the Sumis in 315s, but amazingly there were only a couple manufacturers that make this size and they were all about double the price of Sumi's (Goodyear Eagles for example).

According to my Wheelrite tool, they will clear my upper control arm with the 1" wheel spacers. I got a ballpark figure for the rear wheel spacers needed, but am waiting till I get the wheels installed to get a more accurate figure. I plan on using strips of steel to mimic spacers and once I have it the way I like, just add up the total plate thickness and order that spacer. The Wheelrite tool was OK, but being made of plastic and it cantilevering 13" or so to mimic the tire it had a tendency to not stay plumb. It was good for a ballpark but nothing for exact work (something needed when pushing the limits like this.

I plan on lowering my car, but may be a few months before I do. Gonna see how it rides and if I have rubbing issues prior to lowering it at all.

Looks like you got a nice set there. Have you thought about using several stacks of washers to figure out what spacer you would like to use for the rear?
