Going to try to quit smoking

The patch helps that's what I used and chewing gum.

You have to want to quit more than anything is the key.

Other things just make it a bit easier. After meals is the hardest, pop a stick of gum after a meal helps.

Any time you feel the urge just remind yourself why you want to quit. This is why ex smokers are the worst to be around when you are a smoker. You have to convince yourself that they are disgusting.

I know you are going to have a hard time believing this but I know I read somewhere that a sure fire guaranteed way to quit was everytime you get the urge to light up you strip naked, stand in front of a full length mirror, snap a picture and post it in grumpy old farts lounge on stang fix, I know you probably have some reservations about doing this but trust me it will work!

You need to delete this post immediately. Think about the number of guys on here right now who currently smoke that might consider quitting. Think about the consequences of your post, Rod. Can you just imagine if Mark or Craig were able to take your advice!

Woah there jack wagon, I don't now nor never have smoked (cigs)[nb]I did try a cig once when I was 11 or 12. It did not agree with my asthma at the time![/nb].Grass, maybe but no tobacco.

Try to keep up, Skippy. I realize you said you never smoked. My point was that if you were a smoker I had no interest whatsoever in you taking Rod's advice and posting pics of your naked redneck ass here. I'm more afraid of Craig buying a pack today just so he can post though. It's only a half-step from a mankini after all.

I don't want to see any guy in his mankinini!! :puk

The hardest part for me was the actual habit. In the car, on breaks at work, while drinking, etc. I've managed to break all of them except I still like to smoke when I'm working on my car.

It's all about the habits, no doubt. A couple minor changes in the way you go about your day and it's easy. Idle time that first couple weeks is dangerous. Stay busy with activities that require the use of both hands (think of it as a double date Mark) and you can manage well. A vacation is a good idea. Get out and stay busy. Avoid the same old routines, everything, because as a smoker they all revolve around a cigarette.

Kat, your husband should have no problem quitting. If he has to go eight plus hours a day already the rest should be easy. You will be the one with the opportunity to fail. So if you look at it that way, both yours and his fate rests in your hands. How's that for inspiration?!

quitting cold turkey isn't an option. I wouldn't have any friends left if I did that. :hide

Wait...you have friends? :shrug

cold turkey is your best bet and wishing you the best of luck.

The nicotine is out of your body in 2 to 3 days...it's the "habit" part that is hard to kick.

OK, OK...I'll quit smoking as well. And Kat? You don't have to worry about seeing pics in my mankini, as the instructions were to be buck nekkid.

.....note to self....avoind Mids side of town.....

A couple of my family members have quite using Chantix I believe it was. Told their physician they needed help quitting and they could use their FSA to purchase the prescription. Worked well for them.

I tried picking up the habit in HS to be cool. The very next summer I couldn't swim an entire length of a lap pool underwater, used to be able to do 2 laps w/o coming up for air so my lung capacity had decreased. I stopped early luckily.

My wifes aunt tried the eCigs, she would smoke it for a while, then a real one, then back to the eCig, then she'd forget to recharge it and smoke real ones, didn't help her cut down much. She recently died of cancer and was an RN, does that help?

I agree, don't use 'Try' in your statement.

You can do it. The first thing you need to do is really want to quit. Then quit cold turkey. I quit several times in the 30 yrs that I smoked. Substituted chewing one or twice but always started back. In 1986 I really made up my mind to quit and haven't looked back.

Kat I've avoided posting a reply to your thread because.....let's just say the topic of smoking is a very tender subject with me and I'll leave it at that. What got me to post was some of your responses. I am a pack and a half a day smoker, and have been so for 33 years so far. I too tried to quit numerous times. For the time being I've simply quit trying to quit! I have not quit convinced myself that I truly want to quit. Until that day comes, I know that my efforts will be superficial and nothing more. Some days I go for 2 or 3 straight hours without smoking, and no pressing urge to do so. That tells me that physically I can do it, but it's the mental side I need to conquer. Mentally I'm getting close...very close. Just not yet.

I know you said you were quitting because of your husband. Don't worry about him quitting. If he wants to, he will. My wife quit long ago, even with me still smoking around her. There is one and ONLY one reason you should quit...because YOU WANT TO! No other reason...PERIOD! Until you come to the decision that you truly want to quit, no one in the world, for any reason, will convince you otherwise.

I think you have everyone's support here and I truly wish you all the best in your efforts. Just make sure that it's what YOU want. With that mindset you WILL succeed!

Day 1 with no 'real' cig down and I didn't kill anyone. :thu

My husband found a pack of smokes in his truck that had 2 smokes in it..... he smoked one, I could smell it on him, and he saved the other for me but I didn't smoke it. :part

Good......now stop counting and go on with life. Counting only reminds you how long it has been which increases the desire. Don't worry what hubby does at all.

Unless he finds a cute little thing to spend the night with...nah...don't worry 'bout that!

Kat,
You have been given lots of fantastic advice here. Just quit, cold turkey. No Ecigs, no gimmics. I would be extremely proud to find you a new avatar.
