My mom said there'd be days like this

Ok, now that's frustrating.

Going to take the old strut rods off my daughter's '67 yesterday. These old strut rods are obviously original, and don't look like they've ever been off the car. So, after soaking them for a day in PB Blaster I attack them. The 1" boxed wrench is very, very slow going, and extremely energy consuming for someone that's in the middle of chemo treatments and barely has the energy to walk out to the garage.

I know, if i put a jack stand under the lower control arm, I can put a 1" deep well socket on it, with one of my big honkin' ratchets. Hell, I can even put a cheater bar on the ratchet for more leverage.

Now, I have thousands of $ of tools in my garage. My neighbors are always stunned, as they come over and ask me what's the best tool to use to do <fill in the blank>. To which, I go to a certain cabinet or peg board, hand them the best tool and say use that. (yes, my neighbors love me, because there's no need for them to buy tools, and they always bring them back right away).

So I go to the top tool chest drawer where all my deep well sockets are. Damn near every SAE and Metric size you can imagine ... except 1"! WTF? How in the world, could I not have a 1" deep well? Of course I spent more time making sure, than it would have taken to go get 50 of them.

No real point here, I'm just still stunned that I have never needed a 1" deep well socket before now.

On a side note, though, my roller upper/lower arms came from OpenTracker Racing yesterday. I cannot wait to be giving an update on my daughter's '67 soon. It's going to be an awesome ride!

i went thru the same thing this week over a 11/32 end wrench. let me guess, there was time spent with hands on hips looking at the walls & even up at the ceiling just in case it was hiding up there :lol

I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's pretty sad when you spend 2 hours looking for a misplaced 1/4" ratchet when you can have another for $10 and a 20 minute round trip.

If I remember correctly those 1" nuts are pinch nuts so they're tight all the way off the threads, not just at the tightening spot. I had to use a wrench until I could get them far enough out to reach with the deepwell socket.

Sorry John if you were closer you could borrow mine. I love nit having the right tool because it means a new tool is needed! I love tool almost as much as I love my car. I think I have every size made in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 sockets in SAE both deep and shallow.

I know my stash of tools won't hold a stick to JohnPros, but I have collected alot thru the years.
My son runs a Legends race car and before he moved out, I was constantly rummaging thru his tool box in his Car trailer looking for one of my tools that he borrowed, and trust me that little car took a hell of alot of wrenching! Well now it's even more frustrating because he lives 3 miles away and some of my tools have mysteriously migrated to his place. I don't complain much though, I just chaulk it up as my support to keep him interested in cars!

Now that sounds like a normal day out in the garage for me!!! It takes twice as much time 'cause I'm looking for tools that I know I have, but can't find!!

I'm in the same boat. But more often than not - I have the tool starting out with, but lay it down in the middle of doing something else AND then I can't find it... very, VERY, frustrating.

Recently it's been my tape measure. I measure something, go to transfer the measurements to paper and then spend the next 20 minutes trying to find the EFing tape measure that I JUST HAD 3 minutes ago.

My Dad had that problem so I guess I got it from him. He painted certain tools florescent green so he could find them.....didn't work. It is amazing how fast a tool can disappear. Isn't that why we have duplicate tools and wrenches?

That's why they have a clip to attach to your pockets or belt :eek:mg

That happens to me more often than I can count. And usually when I do end up finding the tool, its right out in the open. Its like, how could I have not seen it sitting right there in front of me. My "favorite" is when it is in my pocket.

A few months ago the hockey puck/WE gift that has been residing on the lifting cup of my floor jack went missing. I looked all over for that damn thing, but gave up.

A couple weeks ago Joe's '68 had a front strut failure and when we went to jack up the car I noticed that my missing hockey puck was stuck to the bottom of his LCA. How many hundreds of miles he'd driven with it there is unknown, but I'm glad it's safely back on my floor jack.

John:
Go buy a 1" deep well socket and, if you ever had one, it will turn up immediately. Ask me how many 1/2" crows feet I own.

Ken
