Uncle Vinny

in addition to her still getting 'used to' North Carolina. Very stressful.

Well considering the weather that Connecticut is getting right now, that is the one thing Toni should be happy about living "down south".

Toni:
Thanks for the updates. Uncle Vinnie will be fine in a couple of days. Keep your chin up!

We will keep both of you in our thoughts and prayers. Stay strong, and hopefully he will make a speedy recovery.

Toni I can relate. They gave me a pillow to hug while coughing as Laurie said. They also made me sit up and caugh a few times an hour.

He is in the right place. ICU will save his life.be patient and roll wth it.

Love you both!!!!!

Here I am again at 10 pm (been at hospital since 8am this morning)

Uncle Vinny is still in Trama ICU and probably will be tomorrow (Sat: 2/9)

His blood count was low so they gave him another transfusion today
with the hope that the blood will bring more oxygen in

They also give him morphine when they insert a tube in his nose
that goes down his throat to try to extract the build up of fluids
from the surgery.

They also give him hydrocodone for the pain.

Yes...I immediately told him 2 days ago about using the pillow
to help him cough up. He does it while he grits his teeth from
the pain...but tries very hard.

They gave him some purered (spelling??) food today but
he could not get most of it down. They still do not let him
have any water that is not "thickened" with this instant
food thickening stuff.

He sat in the chair again today for about 2 hours (2 times)
and I encourage him to move his legs to get some movement
It takes 2 nurses to get him in the chair...but...better then
being on his back all day.

They still have him connected to the leg compressors on
both legs as well as more tubes then a fish-tank !!

His breathing is only at 20%....the machine gives him
the remaining 80%. They tried to reduce machine to
60%...but...it crashed so it's still at 80%. They will
work to get it down gradually.

I could not believe how many stitches and staples were
in both upper thighs...and I've not seen them in his stomach yet
but it was a long bandage that's for sure.
No wonder when he tries to cough he is great pain...yikes

I've not told him yet that Miss Gypsy's ashes are ready to come
back home to us because he tears up a whole lot when he mentions her.
His heart has not yet healed from this.

I'll probably tell him tomorrow that I've posted his situation on
Stangfix....so I'll be sure to wear some metal armor when I go

Be assured your prayers are getting thru because there is improvement.

He is weak and unsteady but he still says I'm a pain in the butt
which is a good sign.

Pat (camachinist) is on standby waiting for the go-ahead to get
Uncle Vinny to Knotts this year...let's just believe it will be

Again...my very very sincere thanks to every single one of you
that have cared so much...I'm grateful to have you all on his side

I'll update again tomorrow

Hi again

After spending another 12 hours at the hospital...it was
decided that Uncle Vinny will remain in Trama ICU most likely
until Monday

They are working to get his lungs clear...and they are
succeeding...slowly...but...succeeding.

He is able to cough some...still uses the pillow to
help relieve some of the pain...but...he's working
very hard at coughing....and doing an excellent job at it

He uses some devise that has a ball in it to see
his breathing ability...and...uses something that
he calls a Kazoo to blow into. It vibrates when he
blows in it to help loosen stuff.

They vibrate the bed a few times a day to also
help him break up the surgical stuff.

He had a terrible flare of gout in his knee last night
which prevented him from getting any sleep

They gave him pain med and gout relief stuff
(alpurinal I believe). His knee was the size of
a water balloon. So...that has been addressed

He is not eating much since all the food is
puree and it really is awful but that's a given

He still has to have his water "thickened" so
it goes to his stomach and not down his windpipe

He still has oxygen blowing up his nose... but they are getting it
down...last night it was at 80%...today they've
gotten it down to 60%...so healing is starting to show

He wears an air mask for about 5 or so minutes a
couple times a day.

He still has those compression things on both legs

So...we'll see what tomorrow brings. I'm confident
that there will be some more improvements.

I called the vet and told them I'll bring Miss Gypsy
back home on Monday. They were ok with that.

So...all in all, other than that gout flare up in his
knee...things are starting to go into the positive column

Again...thank you all for all the prayers...they're working

T

P.S. I waited till he got his meds...then told him
that I posted his situation on Stangfix.

Believe it or not...he was ok with that...must be great meds !!!

He was quite touched to hear that everyone was pulling for him
Toni

Good to hear, Toni!
Vinnie, keep at it and you'll be home soon!
Fare trade winds are at your back! I felt them almost all day today!

Vinny, been working in my garage with Johnpro watching over me, thinking of you as I work on some cabinet doors.

You are an awesome person and will heal just fine, your support team is awesome and prayers have gone out to guide your doctors, so you get the best treatment there is!

Toni, I am in hopes you are taking care of you as well! You are a very special person and take great care of Vinny! I hope you have a nice spot for the final resting spot for Gypsy!

Love you guys!!!!!!

Hi everyone

It's Sunday at about 7:30 pm

Uncle Vinny was...AMEN...moved out of ICU today

Still are giving him oxygen...but now down to 40% with
what they say is a 20% flow

Still giving him shots in his stomach to prevent blood clots

Still giving him shots of morphine

Still wearing the compression gizmo's on both legs

Still getting respritory mask treatments every 4 hours.

They gave him solid food...sliders (baby hamburger) and french fries and
his stomach went into a tizzy and caused big pain (bit surprising
that they'd give him this kind of food...but...they did)

The food they brought him tonight was not eaten because they
could not get his stomach to settle and he just would not eat it
cause he was all cramped up.

He is not in a good mind-set. He regrets getting the surgery
and thinks he'll be using a walker the rest of his life.

I reminded him...that you have to "crack the egg" before you
can make an omlette....so there will be pain from cracking the egg
...but the reward will be delicious. He thinks I'm nuts !!!

I told him the operation was to "get him to walk"....not to prevent it
but...it's understandable that this kind of thinking will happen when
they are shooting him with morphine several times a day.

The explosion of gout in his knee is still there...it will take some
time for the alpurinal to work...as well as getting the blood flow
in his legs to flush it out.

The physical therapists will see him tomorrow (OTR's I think they said)
so we'll see how they get him up and out of bed. He still cannot stand
on his own at all yet.

His fever was a little high...but they are addressing that.

The potasium chloride bag of stuff burns when it goes in, which is
common. I asked if they can give it to him in pill form and they
will check with the doc.

His room has a window...so at least he can figure out if it's
daytime or nightime...which to me is a plus since you can go
wacky and lose your sense of reality. (Guess i would know that !)

His voice is very low and scratchy from all the tubes that have been
down his throat so it's hard to hear all his words the first time around

He still has to work with the Kazoo and the blow machine with the ball
to get more junk out of his lungs since laying on his back causes additional
buildup. Those 2 manual toys are very important and I nag him about using them
and of course he tells me to get lost...but I expect that...no big deal.

But...all your prayers are gently pushing him in the right direction...thank you all

I just need to keep his spirits up and remind him that only he can get
himself out of this hospital....then on to Knotts to have a good time.

I'll try to go tomorrow to bring Miss Gypsy home...not sure I can do it
yet...but...I'll try.

Again...thank you all for letting me get every day's events to you
it helps that's for sure

So...the news today is a couple steps forward....
Toni

But...he's out of Trama ICU
He's on 3rd Floor 3B...Room 20

That's good news! Tell Vinnie we're all pulling for him and that he needs to really overcome Mount Hackaloogie and get his lungs cleaned up so he can tell us war stories at Knott's!!!

he's lucky to have you Toni! Thanks for keeping us all up on what's happening. You guys are family. I wish I could come by and see yawl but maybe after he gets home. hang in there

P.S. He does check his emails on his phone when he's not full of pain meds
but I don't know how to to get his email address to everyone.

He told me I should never put it public and I don't want to make any mistakes.

Let me know how I can provide it without it going public...ok ????
(step by step instructions since computer wizard I'm not)

He'd be "THRILLED" to read your messages...that's for darn tootin !
T

Toni, if he is telling you to get lost, he is definitely going in the right direction! :roll

I am glad to hear he is out of ICU! I remember when I got my heart surgery, I wondered if it was all worth it after the first couple days. I had drain tube in me that made breathing very hard and they had me doing the same respiratory therapy as Vinny! He will start to feel better and the doubt will go away! Be patient with him and give him lots of support! I know you are!

Yes he will have some hard work to go through, but you two together will get 'er done!

Give him a hug for me and tell him we (Amber and I) love you guys very much!

Oh, thank you two for the Christmas card!

With love and prayers!

Mel and Amber
