What did you get done on your Stang today????

I spent all Saturday getting Midlife ready for our local Mustang Club car show on Sunday. The best part of the show is the night before, when club members get to drive all of the new Fords off of the front lot into the back lot. It's amazing what the new trucks have for gee-daws and gadgets...I guess they have to for the cost of these behemoths!

So...Sunday I get to the show field very early to snag the prime spot and help set-up. My basic job is to tally the judging. Club cars don't get judged, but the participants get to pick the top 10. Non-club cars get judged, and with 2 classes, that's a lot of book-keeping. I put the class winners' names, car descriptions, etc. on 3x5 cards for the announcer. I just about finished up, when I asked the Club chairman...well...who won the Sponsor's Choice? We let the local Ford dealer select any car from the field for his favorite, and its the highest award a Club member can achieve. With a lot of grumbling, the chairman says its me! Woohoo!

Finally got most of a day Sun. to work on the car. Finished mounting the left brake line and put the wheel back on. Then on to fixing stuff I did wrong or broke. Replaced the 'new' motor mount that i managed to tear when I moved the car months ago and my temp. trans support didn't move with it... Pulled the right LCA loose to remove the metal cup I put on top of the BJ by mistake as it came with the LCA, later learned it's for the swaybar end link mount.

Next onto packing the new wheel bearings and mounting the disc brakes, wheel back on and close to lowering the tires back on the ground. Now to finish verifying which ujoints I need so I can order a driveshaft.

Finally got some time with the grinder and welder. I repaired the nut inserts for the lower engine bay cross member. I had thought they were captured nuts just like the front bumper braces, they're not. The frame rail has a hex shaped hole that they go into to prevent turning. The nut itself is an insert style (like the hood hinge nut inserts).

I went in through the outside of the frame rail to access them by opening up a small area. It only requires to vertical cut lines and drilling out a couple of spot welds. Once inside I cut out the the nut and cleaned the area up. Since these nuts are the attachment point for my rack and pinion support brace I wanted a little more security than what the factory set up offered (besides, the right side bolt had snapped off while originally removing the cross member). I took some 1/8" plate and cut it down to the width of the frame rail and about 2" extending forward and aft of the hole in length. Then I marked where the hole was in the frame for the nut and opened up a hex shaped hole (or at least close to hex shaped!), in the plate. The replacement nuts were flanged, allowing me to insert them upside down in the new plate. This accomplished two things; it spaced the nut up so it extended down into the frame hole just shy of being flush with the frame rail bottom. It also gave a greater welding surface because I then welded the flange of the nut to the top of the plate. Once that was done, I dropped the plate into the frame and ran a weld around the perimeter of the plate, inside the frame rail.

Once the plate was in I just replaced the removed section from the frame rail, rosette welded the spot weld areas and seam welded the cut lines. After a little clean up with a grinder, you couldn't even tell the frame was opened up. I also now have greater piece of mind when bolting up the R&P assembly!

Drove the Mustang. :steer
The temp was in the 70's so I decided to take a drive out to Woodward

Oh, I didn't eat here, :char this time. Stopped at a Woodward Ave. Hamburger joint, Hunter House and had some burgers/sliders, enjoyed the sun and warm weather.
The car ran good and it looks like I got the intake and ignition problem fixed. :thu

Finally found why the breaks were squealing. The driver side caliper was not letting go and the pads were always dragging on the rotor. Have a new one order now and should be here tomorrow.

I also found the moaning noise under the hood. It is the power steering pump. I need to find the receipt, it is not even 2 years old.

Yesterday I goofed off all day and didn't get a thing done. I didn't plan on getting anything done today either. I had to go in this morning to get a shot in my spine. They usually shoot me up with something prior to the spinal injection, which knocks me out most of the day. Things went a little different though! I was knocked out prior to the procedure, but when it began I was awake...to feel the whole thing, OUCH! I was actually raring to go when I got home...believe it or not.

I finished up the forward roof patch (the one interrupted last week by my son "modifying" the body work on my truck!). I also put the finishing metal work on the new battery tray and finished the few bits on left side frame rail. Other than fitting the radiator support for any radiator mods (yet to be started due to a lack of an appropriate radiator), the metal work is now all done to the front of the car! :yah

The finish line for metal work is now in sight, with just the b-pillars to repair and finish dressing up the right trunk drop off. I figure if I can hit it hard during my next days off, I should have all of the metal work done on the shell within the next week. I'm hoping that is!!

Replaced the high pressure power steering line. It was leaking at the fitting and I could not get it to stop. The new line does not leak. IT is a shame since the old one is less than 5 years old. The best part is that fixed the maoning I had under the hood. It was the power steering pump moaning since it low on fluid.

Shipped off the Saleen Intake I bought a month ago. The 86 is too original to install this on... :no

Took some of the cash and went a LITTLE crazy with the Motorcraft parts catalog. Ordered a new battery, wiper blades, and cap/rotor to replace the incorrect stuff the PO had installed, and then ordered plugs, wires, serpentine belt, Air/fuel filters and PCV valve for a tune-up and to "save" the original parts for the future. Also picked up the correct "dealer" (Courtesy Ford - Denver) license plate frame, new carpet floormats, and new "dew wipes" for the front windows, as the originals are showing a few age cracks. My 80's vintage Escort Radar Detector (OE Saleen equipment) is supposed to arrive today too... :roll

Hoping to spend some time this weekend pulling the seats and giving the interior a complete cleaning.

I can remember when the Escort was THE bomb diggity of radar detectors. I had a customer bring one in when I worked on Deloreans. He wanted it hard wired into the Delorean he had bought from us. Of course we had to "test" it out first by taking it on a road test in a recently completed BMW 630 we had turbo charged and upgraded the suspension on. We completed two road tests at the same time. Both passed! ;)

The radar detector just clips to the passenger sunvisor with the clip you see. I'll only use it "for show". The piece I now lack will be the power cord..... Instead of plugging into the cigarette lighter, Saleen installed a JACK onto the map light and had a special cord. Still searching for details on that cord, but may be something I need to make.

In other news, the parts I ordered from Rock Auto at 10AM yesterday were sitting on my front porch at 8:15AM this morning.
I'm IMPRESSED!

Radar detector cord / map light plug in.

Just came to the decision that the passenger side door is too far gone to repair. Couldn't weld anywhere along the bottom with out the metal just disappearing. So now the hunt is on for another door. Hopefully I can find a used one and just use the new skin I picked up on it. Ain't one thing it's another.
