What's the time estimate for getting the car to the point it'll go to the shop for final primer & paint?

We signed a contract for completion within 4 months. Not bad considering he usually only works 1 day a week.

that brings back memories... I hate sanding!

Looking good though!

Re: '65 Fastback Build--Update 7/11/10

Sounds like a real good deal, I just hope everything works out for you and you can get this long-time project moving forward.

This....

Unfortunately they wanted double my budget to finish the car. However, the bodyman/painter there called me and agreed to work at my house on the weekends for half the price his shop wanted. Once the car is ready for paint, he will paint it at his shop, but all other work takes place in my garage.

.... doesn't sound too good to me.

I hope it works out for you, but from my experience shop owners get "super pissed-off" when they find out their bodyman/painter has been undercutting them. I've known of a few guys that have done this type of thing and they've been fired on the spot. Hopefully this bodyman/painter has a cool boss that is not upset over losing your business.

So far, so good. My in home bodyman seems to be very reliable and moving along quite nicely. Somehow he got the decklid gaps frickin perfect. Hiring out this part is the best decision I have ever made.

Looks like he's making great progress! Its nice having it done at your house, easier to keep an eye on things... Only downfall is the mess. My garage it trashed from my 65

Looks great Ryan. As a "do it myself" bodyman I never seem to have the patience to achieve perfect results. After a few hours/days of screwing around with something I usually settle for "good enough". It's nice to see better results as it gives me something to shoot for.

I'm with Dave on this one. I did a ton of bodywork on my 65 before my painter took over and found myself saying " :fbomb it", close enough... The painter did not appreciate this approach... I've learned I do not have the patience or skills to do bodywork.

Re: '65 Fastback Build--Updated 7/27/2010

Looks AWESOME!

And I like doing body work - I just DESPISE the mess and cleaning the mess up. :rp

Re: '65 Fastback Build--Updated 7/27/2010

Thanks guys, I also settle for "good enough," mainly because that is all I'm capable of. Here is that same decklid gap that I settled on, before he fixed it. I used wood blocks and a BFH, not to mention a porta-power, but still fell short. He fixed it in a couple hours. Experience is key, I guess.

My best effort:

Looking great Ryan, sure beats doing it all yourself and taking years to do it!

8/15/2010 Update

Finally got some primer on the car; definitely a milestone. Entire car was epoxied (black primer), then the 2K primer (gray.) My "in home bodyman" ran out of time, so he'll finish the first coat of 2K next Saturday. Of course, pics:

I'm not entirely convinced yet, but I'm actually starting to think that you may finish this car in my lifetime. Progress looks great Ryan.

Great progress Ryan, you're almost at the point where things really start moving fast. Particularly if you have the $$$ to keep the UPS guy in business delivering parts.

Now would be the time to straighten out your bent drip edge......

I am so jealous... I am totally bogged down in repro panel fitting hell and rapidly getting to the "good enough" stage... Right now fighting headlight buckets, rear valence, and a particular sore spot on both sides; the fenders to cowl interface...

Please take lots of pics of your bodyman's progress, as I will be watching and trying to reproduce his fits, to the best of my hack abilities...

BTW, I am also planning on whimbleton white... Are you going plain jane (secrataries car, as the guys I work with call it) or are you adding stripes?

I assume he primed it right in the garage? did he put up plastic or anything, wondering how he controlled the overspray from making a total mess of you nice garage?
