your best best on cutting that column down & attaching it to the other box will be one of these:

if you use the DD joints, all you need to do is mill some flats on the end of the shafts after they are cut to length. it will also give you a little flexibility as to mounting angles for the box & column, etc.

I like it. But I'm not paying $80 bucks for one! That would be the 3rd most expensive item in the build! LoL. Sounds like another swap meet item to look for :)

I think that's too big Mark. I'm thinking at least half that size. So what range would that put me in?

maybe a 30-06 or a 45-70? Those 30-30's might be good too.

Start with smaller cases in the center and step up to larger sizes as you progress to the outer rows.

I thought i had a bunch of spent .270 rounds, but after a search everything i currently have is live. They would be perfect. 7/16 wide and 2 - 1/2 tall not including the bullet of course. Just the jacket.

just an example. heres something else that would work at a more budget effective level:

i'll look around & see what i've got out in the shop. if i have anything that will work i'll donate it to the cause. also have a pile of spent 5.56/223 shells....

556/223 would be perfect.

Most ranges don't let you pickup spent brass, but I bet they would sell you some.

great scores on the swap meet stuff! Love those tires. Those huge brakes are going to look great and should stop on a dime! That grill shell will be sweet. That spear-o-matic column is the same as what I got in my 67, do you know if it is 16:1 or 19:1 ratio?

How do I tell?

I don't plan to run that box though - I got a really nice box from Garner67 already.

16:1 has the steering wheel or shaft turning four complete turns; 19:1 is nearly 5 complete turns.

I'll check that out tonight too. Both steering boxes.

And check the steering shaft size... better make a note to myself.

i may have found you a joint to connect the shaft & box. let me know what diameter the shaft is.

I could not verify the shaft size last night. I could not find my steering wheel puller anywhere. I assume it should come off like any other column - correct? Remove the large center nut and pull? I tapped on the back of the wheel, with a mallet, and it would not move either...

It's exactly 5 turns lock to lock. The pitman arm completes a full 90 rotation.

But now I wonder if it is a Mustang column or not. It's a 'C3' casting...

Definitely not Mustang, but likely a Fal-coon, Galaxy, or other Ford. Someone with a MPC might be able to identify it for you. The differences are most likely not in the gear box itself, but in mounting and shaft length to the steering wheel.

Have you tried a steering wheel puller and PB Blaster? Watch your noggin when it does finally give way!

Can't find my darn S.W. puller anywhere. I assume it's just rusted tight to the knurled shaft...?

Not knurled...the shaft should be splined.
