Electric Power Assist Steering on my 67

I'm not an electrical engineer but that kind of fact never stopped me from uttering my uneducated opinion on stuff before...so here goes!

There have been many internet reports of issues with return to center of steering systems after the installation of aftermarket electric steering set-ups. Like anything else on the internet one should be careful at taking stuff as fact but the volume of noise must have some credence. Of course, it all could be user created problems just as well as an actual symptom of the electric steering kits.

The biggest contributor to steering returning to center is the suspension caster adjustment. With enough caster the system will rather quickly work its way back to "home". While having an electric motor adding assist coupled to the steering wheel reduces effort when turning the steering wheel I wonder if the mechanical system trying to rehome itself might get a bit of electrical resistance from the motor when it is being forced back the other way. That's the only thing I can think might be a cause of issue.

I'm still a fan of the Borgeson fluid box. Reworking the valve in the pump to limit the assist to just this side of nothing made my car work exactly as I wanted. LOVE it. So naturally I went and built a junkyard electric steering system out of GM bits for the old truck. One day I'll know how that compares. The little coupe will be old school, muscle builder style. One of each. Perfect.

I can say my car has been converted about 10 years now and I have absolutely no problem with it returning to center. As Terry said I think the alignment controls that. The EPAS does not try to hold it in a position, only assists the steering wheel effort. Even without a computer. I do notice that if I manually turn up the effort or make it easy to steer for parking, it's a bit weird sensation when driving highway speeds. I like to keep it just enough to make tolerable for parking but still have feel for driving. I don't like to manually move it around. I find what works for both and leave it but in any case no issues with return to center!
For my car it was the perfect solution. BBF doesn't have a lot of room so no pump, hoses, etc. underhood is great. I love my EPAS and it's one of my favorite mods!
