68 Coupe Daily Driver - Keeping it running and trying to impove it

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

Replaced the package tray Saturday. I had a sheet of Masonite tucked away in the garage, so I cut out a new one. I used the old one as a template.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-250313075433-109301156.jpeg" />
Before cutting out the hole for the defogger, I tested it on a 12V source and it worked. I will have to figure out why it does not come on latter. I wanted a padded tray so I used some quilt batting. I did not like the results but will fix it latter when I have more time and figure out what product to use for padding..
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-250313075458-10932249.jpeg" />
Cut out the dark blue vinyl.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-250313075516-109332421.jpeg" />
Installed, the padding is loose so the vinyl puckers.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-250313075604-10935289.jpeg" />
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-250313075652-109361780.jpeg" />

Next is recover the seats. That back seat is really cracked and the driver seat is ripped.

Lay down a layer of foam then the batting. When you stretch the vinyl tight the foam will compress but maintain pressure against the covering to prevent that looseness you have now with just the batting.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

My wiper motor only works on high and no longer homes. I bought a new motor and delay wiper switch from Newport Wipers.
http://www.newportwipers.com/products.php?year=1964-1%2F2-1968+Mustang&make_id=4

I plan an installing this this weekend. I do not like the looks of the switch knob, looks too modern. I will need to try to find something more period correct.

Broke the lens to the rear interior quarter panel last night. I could not find them in the NPD catalog but I could of missed it. I do not need to be making more work for me.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-280313062447-109371409.jpeg" />

I also plan to remove the heater and get the driver seat recovered before Easter.

John, The to do List is getting shorter and so are the days :roll. 67
And I hate to tell you this but you may have to add one more thing to your list: Register for the Power Tour,
but that can be done the day of.
You are getting a bunch done and it's all looking good :thu. Keep hammering away at that list.
See you in June! :pbj

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

Since it was suppose to rain Saturday, I decided to put in the new delay wiper system. Had to almost remove everything from the dash to get the bad motor out.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-300313150031-109422369.jpeg" />
Putting the new motor on the bracket in was easy. Just wish mounting it was that easy.

<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-300313150055-10944788.jpeg" />

Four hours later, it is in and working.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-300313150107-109452301.jpeg" />

Used the bezel from a 65-66 wiper switch and glued the button from the 68 seatbelts to the knob.

all done.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

The seat base for the driver seat is in bad shape. These are the first seats I recovered back in 1998. At least they lasted 14 years.
I decided to go with the Sport Conversion from TMI.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121953-109561255.jpeg" />
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413122014-10957111.jpeg" />

All Stripped
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413122036-10958884.jpeg" />

After painting the springs, I put on fresh burlap. The wire to hook on the foam had cardboard paper on it. I replace that brittle paper with heat shrink tubing.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121244-10948179.jpeg" />

I used coat hanger wire in the channel to clip to the seat foam wire. Then place the vinyl in the sun to soften it up.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121311-10949544.jpeg" />

After clipping the center section to the springs, I placed it back into the sun again.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121326-109501039.jpeg" />

After getting the vinyl all mounted, I make the holes for the hinge.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121339-109512499.jpeg" />
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121358-10952917.jpeg" />

Then time to mount the seat tracks.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121451-109531141.jpeg" />
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413123230.jpeg" />

All done
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121503-109541070.jpeg" />

Time for the seat back.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-010413121517-109551501.jpeg" />

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

Today was Julie's birthday, so I did not get much garage time. Stripped the driver's seat back, sanded and painted. Put on the burlap.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-030413132038-109592275.jpeg" />

Added the headrest bracket from TMI.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-030413132109-109621713.jpeg" />
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-030413132142-1096311.jpeg" />

Put the seat foam on and hog ringed it to the springs.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-030413132208-109641058.jpeg" />

hopefully tomorrow, I will finish this seat and get it in the car.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

Got the driver seat done. I gain 2" of headroom with the "Mustangs to Fear" headliner but I lost 3" of headroom with these seat cushions. Now I need to lower the seat riser (after the HRPT). I had a few wrinkles in the seat vinyl but a day in the car, the heat has relaxed them a bit. Hopefully they will not be noticeable in a few days.

Got the new AC/Heater box in. Taking it to a shop today to get the AC compressor in and charged.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

I don't think a lot of people realize that you lose a lot of head room with the TMI sport seats.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

I recovered the rear seat Saturday. Most of the wrinkles are from the material being folded. The heat from the sun should smooth them out in a couple days.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-150413094132-109721048.jpeg" />

The compressor is in. I need the 2 grove March pulleys. My current ones have only one grove. They should be in Tuesday. I had to get a new cable for the AC controls. The wrong one was supplied. When Classic Auto Air saw my setup, they said they wanted pictures of the completed Dash and a write up for their web site!
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-150413094127-109711193.jpeg" />

I started tearing apart the passenger seat now. I ran out of hog ring and need to get more.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

Fixed the temp. gauge (ran a new wire). Got the AC charged last week. Drove it to work. It froze me out.
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-220413162737-109741169.jpeg" />

Got some window decals from Quick-Latch
<img src="http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/gallery/10/468-220413162721-109731303.jpeg" />

The new Mustangs to Fear Dash Pad arrived. It sure looks nice. Hope I can get it in before the tour.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

I can't find the dash pad listed on their website? What's it selling for? How's the vinyl look compared to the original? Is it grained?
Jon

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

I believe they go for $295 without the gauge pod. The grain looks more original than what you currently can buy from other vendors. It does not have the front edge seem or the speaker holes. I like the look very much, I just hope I have time to dye it dark blue and install before the Power Tour.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

Got one thing done and 2 things broke. Finished recovering the seats and then the seat track extension broke. Then the started started dragging. I have another starter so I will install it later this week.

I did add a couple accessory jacks for cell phones and laptops

The list is half done.
