70_Fastback: RAT ROD - 193x Ford / 1942 GMC Truck

I thought about that as well - but the trans mount should aid in any forward/rearway motion. I also added that internal webbing as an additional structural component. As I said before, it's fully welded on the back side too

I also checked out some generic 460 swap in XXXX car - and most where designed lesser than what I have built. So I am comfortable with it.
 
I was thinking the same thing... however if he leaves it out in the rain now and then a little rust patina will put the rat back in it. On the motor mounts I don't think you need anything more there, but maybe a cross member running from rail to rail under the raised secton of the oil pan might be something to consider... the front end could use a little bit of the artsiness employed out back...

BTW, what brand metal cutting blades are you using on your bandsaw? Also interested in the hole saws too.

Sorry, I missed that portion earlier; but yes it's seamless DOM tubing. That's all I have used for any round component(s). Lightening holes, 4-link, watts, etc...
 
Just never seen so much attention on the frame of the rat rods I've seen. But hey, it's your ride, and by no means am I gonna doubt your decisions. Your fab work is impressive as hell.

Now if you chrome the whole damn thing, I'll retract my previous statement.

SCARY.... I actually tossed that idea around some last night while looking at it... I may tie a cross member right below the engine mount - couple together at the intersection of where the bones attached to the frame as well. There is a whole lot going on right there.

First off, the metal band saw blades are just the Bi-Metal blades from Harbor freight. They are like $20. They have some cheaper bi-metal ones for like $12.99 or something, but they didn't last one day. I took it back. This is only my second ($20) blade for the entire project. But it's needing changed something fierce now. I also took out the new bronze bushings that I just put in the bandsaw pulley/wheel/thingy and pressed in some new roller bearings. That made it run smoother as well. Roller parts - not just for cars, who would'a guessed it!

And second, the hole saws are just cheap ACE Hardware house brands with the set screw retention for the pilot bit - I just run them slow and use a cutting lubricant while cutting. I first bought some of the high dollar hole saw bits that use the threadable mandrel that is interchangeable between blades. FAIL. It wollowed (SP?) out after 3 of the frame lightening holes. I had to weld the mandrel to the hole saw to finish the job because there was not any place open to get that size of replacement hole saw. I was not happy that day. I "made" them return it, even after I had welded it together, that following monday; LoL.

Thanks for the tools info.. now I don't feel so bad... the first metal blade I got through Sears (I think)... barely last a single cut on 1/8 mild steel. On the hole saws, I think I have one welded up as well. Even on the slowest speed on my drill press it wallows a bit too. I was surprised when I saw your saw in the backround of one of your pics ant thought it looked similar to mine. I'm going to have to order up some blades. On the cross members I know what you mean... when I built the frame for my Mustang I spent a lot of time looking at ways to strengthen things up... I have three crossmembers within about a 2 foot span... better safe than sorry.
 
Is your band saw arm gravity operated, or is it a spring loaded type? Mine is gravity, but my Dad's is (was) sprinng loaded. The spring appeared to be applying too much pressure on the blade. He removed the spring and the blades last longer for him now too. FYI.

Thanks for the heads up! Unfortunately, I will have to miss this one also. Most of my family will be in Manhattan this weekend for the football game (chilli and tailgating--doesn't get much better than that!).
 
The rat rod will still need to be safe so here is an idea to integrate modern equipment in an old school way so it doesnt look out of place.
