70_Fastback: RAT ROD - 193x Ford / 1942 GMC Truck

Looking good. I would pull the rear end closer to the cab and shorten the wheel base even more. Run the front edge of the rear tire right at the rear of the cab. Not like you need a big truck bed, just a place for a fuel tank. At least the wood frame is easy to modify....

Thanks Pete. But I like the long wheel base platform. I'm going for the long, low slung look.

I have also been measuring the cab for the chop and I think 4-1/2" will be about optimal for the look.

Since you are building this, I guess you can have your way.....lol I think the reason I shy away from the longer wheel base is I have seen so many that look like they sag in the middle. Might just be the body mounting but I notice a saggy look. That chop should look good.

J - How close is the oil filter?
You might look at a Motorcraft FL300 - it's a shorter FL1A. Would gain 1.5 inches or so....

Heck - I've got a new one at the house that you can HAVE...

I've thought about that on my 429 as well but the remote filter isn't a big deal. I have a remote filter and I'm going to add an oil cooler too. Some BBF came with a remote filter from the factory even...

Great body work too BTW!

It's tight Bob. I don't know if 1.5" will work or not. I need to cut down the front cross member still and measure again.

If it's too tight just use a remote set-up or angled adapter. Going remote gives you the excuse, and easy opportunity, to incorporate an oil cooler.

What that picture doesn't show though is the change that I need to make to that front cross member yet. I'll cut and tweak that and remeasure things.

I like the use of a paint can to keep the body off the floor!

The paint can is my "spacer" under the frame rail to set my ground clearance. My jack stands don't go down that low.

It is a rat rod afterall, why not rat rod style tools!?! Which reminds me, don't do too good with that bodywork or you'll be tempted to make it shiney!

Isn't that a bit tall for a new style rat rod? Ones around here sit only a couple of inches from the ground.

Note that I said spacer under the FRAME, not the body Pete. Body will be channeled to drop down over the frame rails. I am shooting for 3" clearance between body rocker and ground.

very cool project...
On the oil filter, I had to use one of the right angle adapters from Ford Motorsport that you can spin in virtually any direction. Napa caries at least three different short filters that fit the adapter. Napa Oil filter FIL1521 (3.79 long), FIL-1311 (3.37 long), FIL-1189 (3.89 long).

I was told at one time that V8 explorers possibly use that same adapter.

I take it your going to take reference measurements off of the wood frame, If so you may want to add some bracing at the joints to keep the angles stable. It seems to me that things tend to move even if you don't touch them too much.

What thickness 2x3 are you planning to use? I went with 0.083" on my chassis, but it's a lot of short runs with lots of bracing. If you are just going to run the two outer rails, you might want to use something like 3/16" thick, or better yet stay thin but step up to 2x4 rectangular stock.

I'm guessing your going to run a pretty tall tire out back, and if so the 3.25 gears might be something you'll want to change out later.

I think I typed wrong earlier - I am using 2x4 rec tubing. And yes, there will be many cross braces. I just didn't do them out of wood.

My donation to Jeremy's build.

It should go good with the theme he is thinking about doing since it is probably a Navy cab.

The large shell is a 40mm MK 1 from 1943 with the U.S. Navy stamp on the bottom. My dad gave me this years ago.

I think it would make a cool radiator overflow catch can.

The other two are 20mm shells. Not sure where my dad picked those up during his years in the Navy.

Any ideas what Jeremy could do with these? Be nice.
