Selene/Fred is a San Jose built 1965 Mustang

Got a chance to squeeze in a little bit of work.

Got the rear end out from under Fred. Going to be cleaning it up real soon. I'm thinking SEM trim black and red oxide.

Oh yeah it happened. I am actually glad I did it. Yikes! :hide

The plan from this point is to try and get in there with a grinder or something to try and clean it up a bit and then purchase one of those wand sprayer things to coat the entire interior of the frame rail with zero rust.

It was a pretty neat little nut bracket holder thing in there :shrug. LoL!

Thanks for the link Ryan, I am definitely planning on going the extra mile to make sure I can protect Fred as much as possible so when the day comes that Fred becomes my sons car, he won't have too much to worry about(in regards to the overall structure).

Thanks again Ryan for the nomination for project of the month, that was very unexpected. I had the day off today and wanted to test fit Fred's floor pan. It fits really good, I am really surprise.

First time since July of 2009 that Fred has been outside of the garage. It was pretty exciting to see Fred in some sunlight working on that Cali tan.

Anywho, I am pretty much finished up for the day, heading over to cmayna's shop to help with gtscode's ride for a few hours. I have monday off, so I will be coating the inside of the frame rails as well and welding in the final cross bracing so I can cut out and replace the LS rocker. Progress progress progress, I am having so much fun now that I am at this stage of Fred's restoration. I am still saving up my pennies to get Fred media blasted within the next two months. :part

I about fired off a post just yesterday asking you about media blasting. In most cases, it makes a lot of sense to have it done prior to doing any metal work. So much easier to see what you're actually dealing with and all.

Abe, I'd suggest holding off on treating the inside of the frame rail right now... leave it open for the time being and let the media blaster clean out as much as possible. You might want to consider doing the other side as well given that you know what the pass side looks like. If you are also planning to replace the trunk floors, it would be a good time to slice out the strip the encloses the rear frame rails and let the media blaster clean out the hard to access rear feame rails tool.

I would love have it media blasted, I just have to save up. So far I have been able to do everything without loans or credit cards but it kills me sometimes having to be patient with saving up the funds.

Media blasting Fred is at the tippy top of my list.

That's a great idea. If your going to do something, might as well do it right. Thank you for that suggestion.

I'll cut the same exact section on the LS as I did for the RS.

Now for the rears, I guess I could cut out the top plates with the two holes that sit on top of the rear frame rails next to the torque boxes.

Today, was Blaw. I seem to be getting sick and my body was not okay. It didn't completely stop me though. I got Fred back up on stands so Fred knows its back to business. Ran over to Lowes to pick up cut off wheels for the 4-1/2 and the 3 incher. I cut and test fit my cross bracing so I am really motivated on getting the front end wrapped up by this weekend. I will be putting in a few hours during the week in the evenings this week so I can tackle the rocker this coming Saturday.

HaHaHaHa

( where are my pills ))

Still not feeling well, actually got a little worse. Boss lady told me to take tomorrow off so I can get better and come back refreshed and healthy thursday.

Still didn't stop me from heading to the garage and doing something.

So, what I did do was a lot of planning. I test fit my Arning drop template from http://www.opentrackerracingproducts.com. (Thanks John) I wanted to make sure I had the right drill bits and hardware to ensure a smooth operation mañana.

I started on drilling out the spot welds and also making the vertical cut on the LS frame rail. Tomorrow all I have to do is cut the spot welds from the underside, remove the guts of the bumper bolt bracket, clean it up and move on to the shock towers.

I pulled my media blast gun and fitted it to be used outside of the cabinet to clean up the areas where I will be welding tomorrow for the shock tower reinforcement. I planned out how I will contain the media in my workspace using some plastic sheet material that I have on a roll. Should be fun and messy. Hoping to reach all my goals tomorrow so I can keep moving forward.

Goals for tomorrow:

1: Remove LS front frame rail section
2: Weld shock towers

So far so good.

Working from side to side, section by section to reduce heat build up.

Came inside to grab a snack, heading back outside to do some more wire wheel work followed by more welding as soon as I am done with this yummy Tilamook Oregon Strawberry Yogurt. I passed on the media blasting idea due to the huge mess that it was making. I will try it again in the near future but can't justify it just for this small portion of the project. Oh yeah!

Abe those welds are looking great! Nice job bro!!!

Thank you, it seems though the more I do it the more comfortable I feel with it.

Had a early start and early finish so I got to Fred earlier than I thought.

Worked on Fred for two hours today. Thinking about taking a break for the rest of the evening until tomorrow, still a little under the weather.

Welds started to get way better towards the end as shown on the following photograph.

Almost done with the LS, probably tomorrow evening and I will move on to wrap up the RS.

Please don't take this comment wrong, but the past picture looks like the welds are a bit "cold" and may not have welded fully into the plated structures you're trying to tie together. A perfect weld would look like you've melted the plates into the added material of the weld. You might want to turn up the voltage when welding thicker materials together.

Maybe it's only the picture and not seeing things as well as in person. Does anyone want to comment?
