Selene/Fred is a San Jose built 1965 Mustang

Just picked up this bad boy from HF using the 20% discount in Januarys Mustang Monthly.

So whats the skinny on the welder you've been experementing with?

I walked into my local AirGas where they sell welders, and the Lincoln set up I wanted was 600 dollars. YIKES! :confu I don't have any MIG welding experience and dropping 600 bucks was something I had to really really think hard about. I came across a welding forum that had some pretty decent things to say about two of the HF welders, I decided to check them out.

I ended up finding the 110 for sale, plus the 20% off from my Mustang Monthly. I told myself, that I could invest in the unit without adding financial stress to myself, and save up for the set up I really want while I learn.

Here is the link http://www.harborfreight.com/welding/mig-flux-welders/110-amp-220-volt-flux-and-mig-welder-94164.html and here is a shot of it set up in the garage.

Ever since I switched it over from Flux to MIG I have really been enjoying practicing with it. All I had to do was change the polarity, go down to my local AirGAS and buy a tank with shielding gas, some solid .023 wire and it has been heaven ever since.

I know I have said it once, but I will say it a million more times, Tony from RPS (http://www.restorationpartssource.com) is the absolute best.

I had ordered the outer rocker panel for Fred two months ago, a week ago I realized how much work it was going to take to cut out, salvage and then repair the inner portion of the rocker. I called up Tony with my dilemma and he said, "no problem, bring it on down". Tony took back the outer Rocker and ordered me the outer/inner one piece rocker no questions asked and it should be here by the end of the week.

I can't wait for it to arrive.

Nice looking welding there - you are catching on fast.

I had a good teacher and I have been really enjoying it. I guess sometimes enjoying something can really make a difference.

Whats up Steve? Thanks for checking in on me. LoL! I'm still here trying to puzzle Fred together. The HF welder I got is a 110 amp 220 volt so I think we might have the same one.

So I didn't get to much done this evening but I got to play around with my new toy, Mr. cut your finger off if your not careful. LoL

Cut out the bad metal from Fred's front RS apron.

Cutting out the replacement patch from a Scott Drake repro. Fortunately I am going the patch route, that repro would fit horribly.

hey, thanks again for the 302; I really enjoyed reading through your build thread...good luck with the patching!

Really glad to hear from you Ian, I didn't know you had already signed up here. Very Cool!

Great to see your Mustang in your sig pic, it's going to be a great ride.

Both Fred and I have been able to rest easier knowing that Fred's 302 has found a good home. I wish you the best with your project and would love to see a build thread on it. I seem to find my answers sometimes in others build threads, and if you ever need a hand, there are plenty of us in the area willing to come over and supervise. LoL! We enjoy hanging out and helping each other with our issues, so again, feel free to holler.

With interest I follow up your built thread.

Abe , you are doing great job.

Now that Shag is finished , don't hasitate to ask Craig for help .He has too many spare time now.

I would be checking with Craig first on that one...!

Thanks Bruno, it has been really fun learning as much as I can, and I can never emphasize enough that I couldn't have gotten as far as I have without the NorCAL crew and everyone here at the FIX.

Thank you everyone for the knowledge and motivation to keep trucking along.

I would never assume Craig is not busy with his business, family or just feeling like doing nothing, but he really has gone out of his way many times to help me and I appreciate all that he has done for Fred and I, as well as the rest of the NorCAL crew and like previously stated everyone here on the FIX.

THANKS EVERYONE

Got the patch sized down pretty close

Used my new heavy duty hole punch, LoL! Had to cut out the corner due to the bends making it stick out 1/4 of an inch.

Question for you guys, the holes measure 3/16ths in diameter, is that going to cut it? The spot welds that I cut out for the floor pan measure roughly 3/8ths, is this going to cause any problems in regards to safety or strength?

Another hole punch test on what was left over of the apron I cut the patch out of

3/16 is fine for plug/rosette welding for patches. That's what I used...

Thanks. I may make a build thread, but I already have a blog at mustang68.com which I want to carry on doing...I guess a build thread would probably bring my project to the attention of more folks, and I could get a lot more help that way, so it's certainly something I'm thinking about.
